These comparisons - where both cars were never intended to compete against each other - are entertaining especially because they generate an equally entertaining flow of comments.
M4 can be converted to an M3 in the buyer's mind if suddenly baby car seats, trips to the grocery store become important. 911 cannot be converted to anything other than 911. Thats' what really matters: the ability for the buyer to transition from one model to another for sound reasons without leaving the brand. I know someone who began to explore X3 only to purchase X5 instead. And another individual selected X7 for space reasons when X5 wasn't sufficiently spacious. |

Simple, M3/M4 have always been that good. They punch above their weight so to speak and can play with the 911s. Not sure the AWD version will. Owning both for daily driving, errands, kids, golf clubs the M3 is sublime and completely trackable. 911 is just a different and almost zen driving experience for you and 1 other passenger, or golf clubs in the passenger seat next to you. If I could only have one would have to be the M3 for all around practicality, but will hold onto both for as long as humanly possible. Didn't have time to watch the video yet but I can guarantee this is going to be their conclusion.

I happen to love the M3/M4 aesthetics versus the carrera and carrera S. Once you get to Turbo's or GT cars thats another story.
What has kept me out of 911's for the last 4 car purchases is not my wallet, it's the sheer amount of miles I put on my cars. When I lease an M3, I know my overmileage payment is going to be $5k at the end of the lease. Even on a 2 year M3 CS lease I am 18k miles over. I wouldn't lease a 911. It's a car you purchase. The problem is that everyone sells well below the 60k mile mark that mine would hit the market at and I would be signing my financial death warrant in buying one. One day I will have a 2nd car, but that day is not today.

LOL. engine, drivetrain design, performance, infotainment, tech, and price tag... all the little things that don't really matter on the internet fora.

A more appropriate comparison test would be the Porsche 911 vs. the Chevy C8 Corvette Stingray. The M4's closest competitors are the Mercedes C63 AMG, Audi RS5, Lexus IS-F, and Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.

A base 911 costs 50% more than the M3/M4. Outside of that, yeah, sure I would take the 911. But in the real world, I will take the M3 because... money.

Sure there are serious trade offs but if you want more of the good parts the 911 is the only game in town for many of us unless the M5 drives well enough for you. If the Benz, Lexus and Audi feel like a serious downgrade why even think of them? You want better where it counts the most (your love to drive the car) if you can live with the practicality compromise. Last edited by solstice; 03-10-2021 at 10:54 AM.. |

Lol... I never put anyone or anything in the back of my m2-or previously m4. The 911 fits a car seat just fine in the rear as well.
I went for a 911 this time around simply because after you drive it. Nothing feels quite as good. The g80 m3 I drove was great. But for a car I’m not head over heals with. No way I can drop 100k. I opted to spend 35k more to get a gently used 991.2 turbo s |

...which I am, but I still don't look at the cars the same. I would be comparing the P-Car against the Corvettes of the world rather than an M4. I could live with a GT3 having no kids, etc. (...and having a designated commuter car), but damn, I wouldn't even be able to carry my work equipment to the station in a 911 without cramming the back seats AND what little "frunk" a Porsche has.

And here’s the truth for me regarding the natural competition. I can’t stand anything about them. I hate them even before I turn them on, the ergonomics are sh*t, they make me feel uncomfortable in every possible way. When I drive them they feel isolated, vague, boring etc. vs the F80 and every M3 before it. When I jump into the 992 everything is f*cking bliss. I mean literally everything is better except Idrive. So the question that remain is just if the gap to the G82 is smaller than the hassle of the 992. Judging of this video the answer is yes it is, one person opted for the M4 and the other really struggled to say the 992 and added a caveat that he might change his mind. However it’s close enough that I can’t decide without driving the M4 close to the spec I consider. |
