To Anyone in the General Austin Area...
Hey Guys,
I know a lot of you aren't in the Austin, TX area but to those who are, and maybe it is more broad than around here, but just a warning to everyone, KEEP ALL YOUR VALUABLES out of sight. Amazing number of break-ins going on around here and the main thing they are trying to get is laptops. A few weeks a go I met my father for lunch at the P.F. Changs in the Arboretum at lunch time. The area is somewhat upper scale but always busy, especially the parking lot. Met for lunch at 12:45, decided to run some errands and he went with me because it would have been dumb to take 2 cars, when we came back his Tahoe was broken in to and the stole about 15k worth of items...laptop, ipad, passport, camera with lenses, and much more. Since then there have been numerous amounts of break-ins around the area...all during day time. Main way they are doing it is through jimmying the door lock so its untraceable for the most part. Be careful guys and don't leave stuff in the car. I know that's pretty much already a given but wanted to keep people informed.

Bad news, indeed.
Ironically, my dad lives in Austin, drives a Tahoe and lives right next to the Aboretum (Spicewood Springs) area. So the jimmied the door lock? |

Yep, in his case they bent back the door handle (his is a '98 so it has the lift up handle) and shoved a rod back there to unlock the door.

I play ice hockey at Chaparral Ice on I-35. I've been gone for awhile but I still get emails from the league there. I've been seeing something about hiring on-site security for the parking lot.
Is there something new going on in Austin? When I was here until 2009, I used to always leave my door unlocked...never had a problem.

We live in SW Austin near Dripping and there has been a string of break-ins out here as well. Mostly in the nicer subdivisions and what not. In all cases they are breaking into parked cars which are left outside over night. It usually happens around Christmas, but happens about 2-3 times a year and then it is all quiet again. I *NEVER* park my car outside overnight (I actually keep my garage clean!) FWIW...
