Thank you very much hockeygoalie35 !

Does jacking the car on the back happens exactly on that thinner part of the diff that's nearer the front of the car?

It can, really anywhere on the finned area, just stay away from the drain plug.

Thanks for posting all of your guides. What is the BMW Recommended mileage to service the?
Rear Diff
Front Diff/transfer case
Transmission

I have the ZF transmission on a few of my cars and I know the manufacturer says it’s lifetime, but I don’t buy that. Thanks!

That's the funny thing, BMW doesn't have a service interval, they call them lifetime fluids, like you said. ZF rates the fluid + filter at 50-60k miles. The front and rear diffs should be changed roughly every 40k, and the transfer case fluid is every 50K as well.

Once upon a time BMW had a 30k service interval for rear diff fluid. Bean counters decided since BMW was paying for the initial 36k mile service, if you call the fluid "lifetime" then that saves them some money. They rationalized it by saying the lifetime of the vehicle was 100k miles. I put 160k miles on my E39 before selling it, so I disagree with their definition of "lifetime".

Awesome write up! Did you happen to reset the adaptions for either this service or the transfer case?

Thanks, much appreciated! No, definitely do NOT do that. An old post, but still relevant:
