how functional do you find your REAR seats in an M4?

Looking at a G83 and wondered how functional the rest seats would be more medium sized adults ?

At dealership I setup seat for my height - 5’8” - and then sat in back… seems fine but not much shoulder room on outside ..

I found myself thinking that if I was taking four adults and nobody was 6 foot plus you could probably easily do a road trip for an hour or two each way…. But it’s certainly not “all day” road-trip material as it’s too cramped.

Backseats actually might feel more spacious in a convertible with the top down because the top is off…

For those of you who have an M4, coupe or convertible, how often to use the backseats and do you find that they are relatively functional?

It’s one thing to sit in the backseat on a quick test drive totally another to live with the car for months and months.

I was hoping to get some real world opinions from owners. Thanks.

I've had quite a few people in my backseat, though mostly females (so they're smaller). It's functional. As long as no one is above 6 feet, you should be fine for shorter road trips of up to an hour. It's actually quite roomy back there for a sports coupe.

And Interestingly enough, I've never had a complaint about the space from someone sitting in the back.

Admittedly, I don't often have 2 in the backseat, most of the time it's just one extra person...and it's totally fine for a +1 (as long as they're not too tall).

Obviously no 2 door coupe is going to have the room of an SUV or minivan which are designed for people-hauling, but the M4 is a large coupe with functional back seats. I use my M4 as my daily driver, and that includes taking the kids to and from their various activities. I have a pre-teen and a teenager, and they're both likely within a few inches of how tall they'll be, and they fit fine in the back.

This is probably not the vehicle that you'd take 4 adults on a long road trip in, but it certainly serves its purpose as a daily.

Those were my concerns. Thanks for the input.. I have a newer M550 and an F15 X5 which are the primary cars that my wife and I drive.

We have three kids, but they are all older late high school and college we rarely if ever now have all five of us in the car at once except for family road trips where we would either take the X5 or 5er.

We’re looking to add a third car and I test drove a new X5, and it just seemed like more of the same…

My dealer had a convertible M4, and we took that for a spin and it was so much fun

That got us thinking when my wife or I commute to work solo either one of us could take the M4 and three occasional trips where we’re heading around town with one or two of our kids. You could actually do it with the M4 the trunk looked big enough for moderate trip to the grocery store…. Maybe it’s not the car I would take for a huge run to Costco but it’s definitely not small.

We do occasional trips to visit relatives and they are about 45 minutes from our house. That’s probably the most common trip and will have two of the three kids with us.

I think for a short 45 minute trip they would fit in the back my wife and I are not tall, so unfortunately neither are the kids..

I can see how when you’re at the dealership in your test driving a fun car. It’s really easy to rationalize things away and tell yourself it’ll all work out so I thought I would ask people here who have won who have a real world experiences before I went out and dropped 100 grand on a semi practical fun car.

I was very surprised at how quiet and relatively pleasant. The M4 was with the top up in comfort mode. It was quiet, and the ride was compliance not quite as luxury smooth as my M550 is in comfort mode, but totally acceptable for a daily driver.

I feel like my M4 may as well not even have rear seats at all.

Why do you say that? Do you just not use them or do you think they are way too small to be used?

They are better than those in a 911, not by much but they are still better.

Rear seat is a storage shelf at best for a laptop bag. We did not buy this or previous M3/4’s as a four seater.

The rear seats are more like an extension of the trunk. Only shorties, kiddies, and the wife's handbag comfortably fit back there.

5’11” - I can fit very comfortably in the back. I’ve my kid riding in the back front facing. Super easy to get him in and out with cars parked on either side, so long as the door can open to the first hold-stop position. At 18 months, he prefers to ride the M4 instead of the X5. And he always wants his turn in the driver seat pretending to drive. He’s already made the connection to the red start stop button making the steering easier to move - hasn’t figured out that I have to also be pressing the brake. I’m going to have a lot of trouble with this guy as he gets older.

Completely off topic now:

Numerous trips with several people in my car ranging from 5’8” to 6’1” and haven’t had a complaint. Easy car to take a few friends to dinner in.

I transitioned from a 135i so the back of the G82 is down right spacious. Even my daughters, age 16 & 18, mentioned the relative roominess, but they’re both vertically challenged.

I’ve had a 5’8” female and an infant rear facing car seat in the back with my 6’2” brother in the passenger and they were comfortable. That’s when I was thankful for getting the M4 instead of the M3. I love both cars but I’m a coupe guy. A dying breed.

carbon bucket seats make the back of the M4 spacious. No complaints from anyone up to 6’2 that have been in mine.

Would not want to take a long trip in them but for around town they are usable for adults. Have not been in a Coupe but believe the convertible has less side to side room than the Coupe.

Just buy a m3. Problem solved. Anyway, the m3 is much better looking than the m4.

But I want a convertible! You can’t put the top down on the M3!

Out of general principle, I don't buy cars with more than 2 doors.

This is a wild take. I've owned a 911 and currently own a G82. The rear seats are not comparable at all. Adults and children over about 6yrs do not comfortably fit in the rear seats of a 911.

Most of us don't ever sit in the rear seats of our own cars, but I've always done the test of setting my driver's seat and then seeing if I can fit behind myself in the rear passenger seat. It's not even close between the 911 and M4.
