What is the hotspot useful for if you don’t have the back screen? Maybe I don’t understand the point.

So I went over this very question with the Genius people today because I had the same thought. They said that in addition to the TV, it’s mostly for people that have ancillary devices that do not have cellular connections like tablets, printers, etc.

It also enables you to make calls and receive calls in the car without having your phone with you.

You can set up a wifi hotspot on a phone and we all have phones just about all the time. Sounds to me like the TV in the back is the prime reason to do the esim. I had an internal wifi spot in one of my G12's and after a year I realized that I had paid ATT $20 a month but hadn't ever used it. But I didn't have the luxury rear seat package with the tablet etc., and I didn't get the big screen for the G70 either.

I don’t think there’s much to disagree with that reasoning.

One reason would be if the car was equipped with the climate comfort laminated glass package, the windows block most if not all incoming and outgoing reception. The eSim would be basically required if you want to make phone calls.

Is this true?
I ordered the comfort laminated glass, will I have issues with my phone getting reception?

The use of the external antenna might push me to do the esim as I do drive in some crappy cell reception areas. I had thought that using the charging tray gives you that but now I am not sure.

No, I don’t believe so. I also had this very question and conversation with Genius. Apparently, according to them, to take advantage of the cars antenna, you must be connected by Wi-Fi.

If you are using car play (which uses wifi with bluetooth), does that give you antenna access?

I signed up for ATT, got through all the screens sucessfully. Then the app says to activate in the Mobile Devices menu in the car. That pops up a Q-Code, says show it to your phone. But it sends me to the website for signing up for the My BMW app, which of course I already have because that is how I activated the esim. Have a request in to the Genius Line.

It should activate the eSim automatically, at least that’s what it did with my new T-Mobile account

What does it say on your My BMW app? Does it say set up?

It says go to the car and the mobile devices app and click on set up personal esim. When I do that it shoes the q code that takes you to the website for the my BMW app. It is an endless loop. The ATT website shows it is active so this is a BMW issue.

Did you try doing a full reset of the iDrive?

No, going to wait to see if the Genius says to do that.
However, I may delete and reinstall the My BMW app as that is painless.

That is what they had me do, twice now at different levels. There are two levels of reset, one for 20 seconds hold and one for 70 seconds. I have done both with no issues whatsoever. In both those cases, they solved the problem. Very easy to do.

Thanks. I tried deleting and reinstalling the My BMW app but that did not work. I'll do the idrive reset and report back.
