Talk me into buying an M3 Comp X-Drive please!

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I currently own a 2019 BMW 440 X-Drive with the performance and sound package and love my car. The thing is my warranty is coming to an end next February and I am am looking at $3,500 + tax for an additional 2 years warranty plus I'll will need new brakes and tires.

I am using this info to convince myself that I need a new car by February, and I have never really kept a car longer than 3 years anyway. I checked out the I4 M50 but at this point it's looking like 1.5 to 2 years for delivery. I live in Newfoundland, Canada so I will be winter driving the car for about 5 months of the years. With the immanent death of ICE cars on the horizon, I would LOVE to stretch my limits and buy an M3 Comp X-Drive, delivery times are still a ways out but not as bad as the I4.

My not well thought out plan would be to get a minimally optioned M3 Comp X-Drive (tanzanite blue being my only option) since it will hold it's value and scratch my itch to own an M3 before cars become electric buzz machines.

I'm not even sure what I'm looking for other than confirmation that I should do this! Thanks

If by this you mean your financial limits…then no, you should not get one.

idk about stretching limits but the Xdrive on winter tires is great in the winter here but of course not sure how well they clear the roads in Newfoundland. An M3 may not be the best primary winter vehicle. The AWD is pretty amazing on track as well. So best of both worlds, I am very happy with my Tanzanite blue M3.

Talk you into buying an M3 x-drive?

They look badass
4 doors
AWD for winter/quicker 0-60 times than your current car
Practical
Will have better resale value as time goes on vs your current car

And it's just more car than what you have. You have a great car but REAL M cars are just the peak. Those M lite cars is like winning 2nd place. It's cool but 2nd place is just the 1st loser lol.

You want the top of the line. Get the M3 x-drive.

Can you afford the monthly payment?

If so, the M3 Comp xDrive is a no-brainer.

It's worse. It's like settling for the mediocre sister of the girl of your dreams.*

[*Not my original line - I can't remember where I read it. It was in connection with M Perf and proper ///M cars though.]

You shouldn't need to be talked into buying an M3. You should be dreaming of owning one.

M3 or Not For Me.

To BMW marketing Dept.: I, along with the rest of the other forum members, will be expecting our future advertisement royalty checks in the mail.

——————————

In all seriousness, how special is the M3 to you? To me, emotional attachment and the non quantifiable 'specialness' of a car is vastly more important than performance metrics, even when picking a sports car for an enthusiast.

For example, while I wait for my M3 to enter production, I drive a 2019 VW Golf R. It's as much car as most enthusiasts would need on the road. But honestly, I don't care for it that much. It handles well, good power considering it's relatively low weight. I hardly recall a time where I've driven it and thought it should be quicker, have more power, etc.

But, it's boring to me, I have no special/emotional attachment for it. When I bought it, I chose the most performant 4 door car in my budget and met my needs, and figured that would be the car I would enjoy the most.

The M3 on the other hand, i don't think there is any other 4 door car on the market today that I would rather own, regardless of price. The M3 has always held a special place in my heart for the perfect do everything car. Combine that with the unique styling and bold color palette on the G8X, it's about as special as they come to me. The performance is just a plus

I hear what you're saying, I had a 2016 Golf R then a 2018 M240 and now a 2019 440 but I'm still looking for something else, the answer must be M3!

I have seen it across the boards of the many cars I’ve owned. These cars are special no matter which model you choose but they make certain models that elevate the car higher and higher for a reason.

If you can swing the cost, getting the top tier model is always the best bang for buck.

Good analysis

My '18 C63s was a similar case. Warranty expiring in May, similar cost to extend, a complete brake job due any day now ($4,800 for discs, pads, labor on an "s"), a plethora of high offers for it, and I had fallen of of love with it and MBZ's in general (it was #8 for me). The day after I placed my deposit on an M4Cx I sold.

A major factor for me is you only live once. With a good market treating my investments well, not having spent much due to living in the era of Covid (despite being fully faxed & boosted I have survived it twice, so far), other purchases/treats being "problematic" (e.g., travel restrictions, chasing tail and still early into my current marriage, too old and experienced to still enjoy drugs etc.) I did not hesitate.

On a tangent: You said "extended warranty + tax." Do you have to pay tax on services in Canada? If so, that really sucks ornery farm animal. Whenever California politicians even mention taxing services we get pitch forks and feather pillows and heat up buckets of tar.

Even if you can't afford it I would do it. You have options like contributing less to your 401(k) and maybe not taking a vacation that you normally would take.

Unfortunately we pay tax on virtually everything here including services like warranties, and yes it does suck ornery farm animal.

This is my favorite answer yet! I could just unload some of my comic collection if worse comes to worse. I can afford it I'd just have to not blow as much money on other stuff.

I have some basis to make a reco here. I had a 6 speed m performance f32 xdrive 435, with the mppk. I've had a few cars in between, and now went for an M4c vert (which, of course, is only auto). The real m car is in a different league. Yes, it can loaf around, but you always have the sense it's a bit unhappy with not being let off the leash. The m perf cars don't have that slightly unhinged edge - and, IMHO, it makes the car

My one reco - pretty much none of the options can be retrofitted. Don't be hasty on grabbing a minimal build. Some of the options truly do make the car more special. Carefully consider them (full leather, carbon seats, carbon trim, 3tc.)

After I got my f32, I almost immediately regretted not getting an f82, and ended up spending a fortune doing a full m4 interior retrofit, m4 trunk, m4 mirrors, etc.

You won't regret the M car - but please do read through the options carefully, or at least check them out in person.

(My car has every option except the buckets, and even that sole omission I slightly regret. I made the rational choice to go for cooled seats / air scarf, and it makes sense, but man those buckets are sexy.)
