Ouch. Tough lesson and glad OK.

When you buy new one, just add in a winter set from BMW into purchase. Even if you replace it in summer!! 4K well spent. Thats been my practice for last 3 BMWs here in CT as all delivered with summer rubber.

I don't think anyone should be out to criticize him in a negative way at all. Of course it's a shitty situation but it's also a teaching moment for everyone in the community. Is that not what this forum is for? To share and learn?

At 25°F conditions winter tires are definitely warranted. I would argue even more so if you're leaving your car parked outside in ambient temperatures compare to a warm garage. Leave your car parked overnight in those temps and then check the tire temp on your idrive the never morning. The manufacturers literally tell you not to use summer tires below a set temperature. It's not a money scam from their end lol it's literally because they're not designed to be used in those conditions for safety

Lived in PA and had a freak early season snow and low temps. I was at college class and they let us out early, didn’t matter. I crashed 2x on the way home, first time just kissed the guardrail and got a push from a friend back to the road, the second time was into a ditch. Summer tires were the issue, there’s no excuse, they are incompatible with winter driving.

I’m really sorry this happened to you. And I’m glad you’re safe.

But this was of your own doing and foreseeable a mile away, and I’m sharing this as a cautionary tale for others who think the same way - DO NOT ever use summer high performance tires at less than 45 degrees. They become less capable at the 55-60 degree mark downwards if you care about max performance. Yours in not the first car in this situation because of tires, and unfortunately, unlikely to be the last.

I learnt this almost the same way as you where I nearly spun out my 435i in 2016-17 on a sweeping highway on ramp in cold, wet conditions on summer tires. I was able to rapidly correct and come to a stop without any damage. Ever since that day I always, always ensure I have the right tires installed for the conditions. Even if it isn’t super cold in someone’s area, the PS4S sucks cutting through water on wet roads. So if you see a lot of rain seasonally, think about that.

It’s not worth losing a $100K car or something infinitely more precious - your passenger and your lives / health - over $1.5K to 2K in tires. All the moronic justifications a select few people on this forum spread as gospel to others (who may not even be HPDE trained drivers) is astonishing. For something so consequential. All the “I’ve driven like this for 30 years” is not helping others!

Germany, which seems to be the only country with collective intelligence on automotive discipline and safety, legally requires everyone to use snow tires in winter (“October to Easter”).

And we’re talking about basic safety. Not even people like us driving high-performance cars. Some owners really save a little coin to drive their M3/M4 slower than a Camry for 4-5 months a year? (Camry’s have thinner all-season tires which are far better; but still not the best)

Glad you are okay OP, but plz let it be a lesson to use winter tires at winter. Summer tires are amazing at summers but useless in winters.
And to anybody thinking it's up to them to drive their cars the way they want to, just grow up and take some responsibility. People's lives and fate are not supposed to be in your hands. It could be OPs life but it could also be an innocent kids life.
It's really disturbing that wealthy people driving dream cars don't have better judgment.

I’m not debating the winter tyre issue, however some of the comments being left are not my idea of a teaching. We see what happened, and it’s a nightmare for the guy in question no doubt.
I just find some of the reply’s absolutely pointless, these people are obviously perfect in every way and good for them.

Driving a 500+hp car with summer tires during winter is like playing Russian roulette. Hope others learn a lesson from this post.

FWIW there are good BMW videos and plenty of YouTube content on winters.

My experience with my always garaged cars are 45 degrees is problematic for spirited driving on summers. They slip and chatter like crazy. You can tell they are rock hard and simply not working. By design of course.

Not your fault. Glad you’re ok. Insurance will take care of the car.

Glas the op is ok, but winter tires could have save the day. PS4S are probably rock solid at theses temperatures. I live just North of New York state and in here it is mandatory to have winter tires from December 1st to March 15th. I travel alot in any type of weather at regular highway speed during winter and I can regulary witness the difference in tires quality. You arrive in poor conditions area and you see car everywhere on the side of the road. Personally I use Nokian Hakkapelitta 10 with studs and no matter the conditions out there they perform very well.

For the positive, very happy OP is ok. It’s a testament to BMW’s safety and great peace of mind as an owner.

A one car accident is, by definition, the driver’s fault. With the amount of damage present they were certainly driving too fast for conditions and the driver is also responsible for ensuring the equipment on their car. Not having proper tires in winter conditions is also the driver’s fault. Frankly it’s fortunate it was only a one car accident and OP didn’t take out someone else’s vehicle too.

Insurance may pay for this but I would fully expect them to immediately drop coverage afterward.

Glad OP is physically OK.
Regarding insurance, will the insurance adjuster take into consideration the tires mounted at the time of the accident if it was a weather-related incident? Could they elect not to pay out the “normal” amount if proper tires were not used?

Uh proper equipment for the conditions is called common sense. How you want to do it is not a factor. Please stay off the road if you think his approach to tires for winter is sound.

Had he hit and injured someone is ok eh? One of the most ridiculous posts on this forum.

This is a tragedy, but at least you’ve made it out and are (hopefully) now wise to the importance of winter tires. These northern winters are no joke. It’s made worse if you park your car outside in such temperatures. Hopefully you’re able to get a replacement that can feel a little close to the dream, but never underestimate the uselessness of summer rubber on ice. Best of luck to you and sorry for your loss.

Cant believe how stupid some people are.. Its not excusable to drive on summertires in those conditions. Its not a "my decition" case as you are just lucky to not kill someone else with your bad decitions. All the negative comments are fully deserved.

In EU police would rip the license out of your hands, and the insurance would not be paying out in full.

No excuses, its simply ignorance and stupidity in its purest form if you think its even remotly ok to get out on the road in those conditions on a set of summer tires. You are being stupid. Sorry to say. The fact that you think you can stay below 50mph is just laughtable.. or sad.. you understand nothing!!

Glad your okay! Car can be replaced. I have been in the insurance industry for 30 years, you should not have a problem with coverage because you had summer tires. Even those who have DWI’s and get in accidents have coverage for the claim.(they are canceled after) Your rates at renewal will probably increase.

Some comments are shitty that’s for sure, however just because no one does it so OP decides not to and gets in accident is the dumbest justification of such behavior. OP stated he didn’t swap tires because he drives under 50mph on his way to work… Braking distance on summer tires can be up to 10 times normal stopping distance in good conditions. 10 times. I will not bash OP here since he is punished enough having his car destroyed as an outcome of his decision to take his car out but to everyone out there stay safe. 4wd will not save you when your tires are not suitable for conditions.

My gosh that is a ton of damage. Sorry to hear this. As long as you are ok out of this, you will find a better upgrade and you will be happy. I would say even winter tires would have had trouble with black ice.
