Radar Detector Mounts

Anyone running radar detectors and can share their experience with how it is mounted and share some pics?

Blendmount, in my opinion, makes the best mirror mounts on the market. On my C7 Corvette, I had a Blendmount with a Uniden R3. It was an awesome combo being that the radar detector itself was on the smaller side and there was no need to access the mirror bottom. So it was placed directly underneath the mirror and had a stock appearance.

My concern with the G82 is it seems you need access to the bottom of the mirror so I don't think a mount would look aesthetically pleasing. If you feel otherwise, and have a photo, please share.

I think the sweet spot would be the highest point on the windshield just left of the mirror. I did some research, and those black dots (called frits) will not effect performance.

Anyone else have other ideas and/or photos for an effective mount?

FYI. I'm looking into the Valentine V1 Gen 2.

Thanks.

Blendmount and wire tap looks great and works well on our cars. I used it with my uniden R7. It looks clean.

I can share a pic later. But basically I have a G82 with a Blendmount and a V1 Gen 2. The Gen 2 is powered from the OBDII port (to benefit from vehicle speed readings so I don't get noise traveling at lower speeds). Install is very simple for the mount. It just hooks to the mirror stem as always (exactly the same as my now-sold 435i, and current gen X5). The wire goes between the windshield and the trim and goes down the trim gap in the A pillar, down the side of the dash (concealed in a rubber seal) and exits at the bottom to hook into the OBD port. Easy peasy. No tampering with vehicle wiring, everything is concealed without removing any trim, and can be fully uninstalled in 2-4 minutes.

Also, there is not interference from gesture control in the M4. It sometimes randomly happens in the X5 and goes away with minor adjustments (front to back of the detector). I was dreading problems requiring taping up the IR blaster for gesture control but didn't need to.

Good to know. So you're running eSAVVY. I noticed from the site, however, that 'eSAVVY cannot serve as a power source for V1 Gen 2; Use the Lighter Adapter or Direct Wire Power Adapter.

So is the port alone a sufficient power source?

I have the SAVVY - see here:
https://www.valentine1.com/v1-detectors/savvy/

It works fine with the Gen 2.

eSavvy is a software feature in their mobile app as far as I can see and obviously can't be a power source. I think it uses GPS on your mobile phone and relays speed from that to your V1 through Bluetooth. I don't think that is a good enough alternative unless you really want to mirror tap.

You don't have a compatibility issue? Their site mentions one with BMW security systems OBD sensing alarms.

Actually, thanks to the Valentine/Savvy comments, I found the solution I was looking for on my Escort mount. I hate having the beautiful carbon fiber cover open to use the 12v outlet in the cup holders. I bought a OBD connector for 12 volts from it, and a hard wire Escort connector. Will plug one into the other for $48 and solve my problem! Would not have known this was possible without this thread! Gotta love the Forums!

No issue on 2022 M4, 2021 X5 or 2016 435i GC. It may be something on much older models.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I don't like the look of something hanging below the mirror. I'd much rather have it tucked in the left lower windshield. I accept that this location is not at sensitive as if its high up in the window, although I might wonder how much of a distance 2ft really makes. The rub for me is that in my F82 there was the 12v outlet in the passenger footwell so I could have 1 to power the RD and another to power the phone charger. I just ran a cable across the top of the steering wheel over to the side of the window and it was actually tucked fairly out of the way. There wasn't a great way to do that though with the G82 setup. I'm considering doing the mirror tap and then running a cable tucked in along the top and side edge of the window to the left lower corner.

Thanks for sharing.

Is there any more wiggle room to raise the detector higher so you can see less of the blendmount from the bottom of the mirror.

My goal is to have it flush with the bottom of the mirror but still needs to be further back to access the buttons at the bottom of the mirror.

In the case of the Valentine detector that is as flush as it can be mounted. It's so close that if it was any closer you wouldn't be able to press the garage opener button.

Blendmount here as well with my Valentine Gen 2. I do have a Uniden blendmount for sale in the interior parts section if anyone is interested(BR7-2036).

Do you just stuff the wire under the trim around the window and down the A pillar? It looks like a somewhat chunky wire for that area.

It's a flat wire. It is not visible if run properly behind the interior trim around the window and A Pillar.
