How many wheel weights is too many from factory?

Just found that I had 22 on my front left.

Haven't own many cars but that looks way too many even for aftermarket wheels...

I was going to do a wheel balance check during brake-in service due to some high frequency vibration through the steering wheel, but I thought it's just bad roads around where I live now since I only got my car after relocation.

Any thoughts?

That's a lot...seems worth having the wheel balanced again to see if someone was just really in love with sticking on wheel weights.

Yeah, normally I'd trust the factory balancing to be precise, but this looks like the results of a Pep Boys after market wheel installation.

(It's especially egregious considering it's on the same area as the air valve/TPMS.)

Have someone that does Road force balancing re-balance it. It will tell you if you should index the tire and wheel for optimal balance.

Yea I was gonna do that with break-in service, but I'm only halfway through 1200 miles tho, I discussed with my SA and it seems the wheel balancing and alignments stuff are under warranty for first 1000-2000miles so I kinda want to sit on it for now - other wheels seems to be fine, around 4-8 weights

Yea also I'm not sure if having weights spread out over such large area is doing any favor, I'm under the impression that they should preferably be placed in a concentrated spot

Is that something dealer would offer?

They also have black colored weights which do not show like these on black wheels. It does look like an awful lot of counter weight though, do you have steering wheel shake? If not, its balanced and its just a bad tire (eve if new) with a weight "fix"

Well I'm getting very high frequency vibration but honestly it could just be road buzz. When I had my C63 I had much better roads so I don't think it's fair to compare. They had a shop foreman test drove with me and said it's normal - just the chassis being rigid, and they'll check the balance next time the car is in the air, which is break-in service. I'm still more than 600miles away tho.

Only time I've seen so many was on my winter wheel that was slightly bent, and it was mostly remedied by just adding weights spread across, until I git the wheel fixed

22 would be excessive. 4-8 would be the most I would expect to see, and 8 would be on the absolute limit end. Road force balancing, when done correctly, moves the actual tire around on the rim, to the best balance point, and then the weights are added and balanced to perfection.

"The wheel balance machine" will tell you wear to place the weights and how many oz.

"You" don't get to pick where and how many.

They do offer different color wheel weights 😁

Yeah I'll have to let them check it out during service, it's been fine driving, just looks bizarre to me...

Yeah I think the other 3 wheels with 4-8 weights are absolutely fine. I can't get hold of my SA but it seems they are just going to do road force balancing for all wheels at this point. Hopefully they can figure out what's going on.

Yeah I know, it's just usually the machine would indicates a particular spot to put said amount of weight, and usually it won't be spread out like this from my experience burning through tires in my other cars.

If it really need this many weights on a single spot I would imagine they probably need to counter balance the spread with some weights on the opposite side of the spread edges... just my 2cents

That's not OK. If there isn't something visibly wrong with the tire and a rebalance results in the same amount of weight, I'd want the wheel replaced.

As for the high frequency vibration, I have that at highway speeds on the Michelin PA5s when they're cold. Goes away when they warm up.

If you have ever balanced tires the weights can be all over.

It has nothing to do with what you visually see and trying to make sense of how it looks "logically".

My guess; the tire or rim may have a defect.

The opposite wheel does not have that many weights so something is up with that wheel.

(I've balanced tires all be it a super long time ago. I've seen my former F80 tires balanced. The weights can go anywhere.)

Yea it's exactly like what I felt on the PA3s when I was living in NE, thus I think balance wise it could be OK and those vibration could just be road buzz. We'll see what they can do regarding this wheel. My experience with my CA and SA has been great so far, but I doubt BMW is willing warranty the wheel just because of needing too many weights tho, since apparently it passed BMW's own QC.
