Anyone throw a spare in the trunk?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I hand't even considered this, but I saw someone on a FB group post their spare they got from EZ Spare.

Got me wondering how many people are hauling around a spare (and jack) versus how many are just taking their chances?

I'd be reluctant to use the included fix-a-flat and ruin the TPMS sensor.

On the other hand, with xDrive, I'd be scared that any spare would be out of the 1% diameter tolerance and strain the system.

I guess there's always BMW Roadside Assistance, but I've (thankfully) never had to use it in the 18 years I've been driving these cars.

I’ve owned cars without spares for 6 years. I’ve had 2 high speed sudden blowouts. On one occasion I could fill air to hold air for about 2 minutes that I used to limp off the highway. On a second occasion, it was a sidewall tear and it was impossible to temporarily hold air. Massive inconvenience but I was able to get a mounted winter tire from home in a second car and get AAA to install it on site (used AAA for faster service even though BMW uses AAA behind the scenes I think):

I don’t use the M4 to go more than 50 miles away from home. It will be flatbedded to a tire shop if I were ever too far from home. And I’d just show up with a mounted tire from my other set (summer set of winter, etc). And use that until an ordered tire arrived.

It’s really pay-to-play if you’re going long distances with your G8X. New “disposable” tire if it doesn’t match your current set. Accommodations / alternate transport if a tire shop is closed (holidays, after-hours, etc).

I carry a spare in the trunk of my G83. From Modern Spare.

M xDrive is not like regular xDrives. It’s rear wheel only until it notices slip in the front. You will need to be worried about your rear differential if you go long distances without equal depth tires at the rear.

Did you just get the g20 kit? It's $100 more than what I saw at EZSpare, but I like how it comes with the jack, wrench, carrying case, etc.

The seller made this comment in response to a question which is a bit misleading. "Yes our kit is designed to fit and work just fine with M-Brakes. Exceptions are for full-on M3 models in later years."

EDIT - Disregard - I found the G80 one - https://modernspare.com/product/2020...e-kit-options/

You know how much it weighs roughly?

Oh interesting. I had just figured it was like the standard rear-wheel biased (but still AWD) until you put it in RWD-only mode.

That's pretty cool. Thanks.

I carry the OEM flat repair kit in the trunk and a AAA card.

I've limped home on that OEM kit with white goo leaking out of my tire, stopping every few miles to pump up. Luckily I had a battery powered compressor on me so it was much easier than plugging that kit compressor into the 12V every time.

I highly recommend this air compressor for long drives. I always bring it on road trips.

I've been using that exact model for years. Great investment.

Does this kit satisfy the "within 1%" rolling diameter difference? I thought I saw somewhere that this kit was slightly off/to small.

Modern Spare. I also have one for my e91. Best part is, the tire is made for I think 81mph, not the usual 50mph.

Tag.

And thanks for the idea on the portable compressor. Just found out that Milwaukee makes which is good bc we have lots of batteries for them.

My son got a Toro snowblower key in his tire. He has non-run flat Pilots, so had to limp home before the air dropped too far.

I wonder if a car of tire sealant and a Milw portable compressor would work in a pinch for his C300 and our M3.

I am not too fond of spending $1,200 for donuts for our cars. Almost every tire issue over the years has been a slow leak.

If usning a donut, it seems like using RWD would mitigate any front diff issues, although could still be a problem in the back with long term use (I.e., donuts are temporary).

Complete modern spare set up was around $500 when I bought it in the spring.

I like the form factor of the Milwaukee M12 Tire Inflator. I would pick up a Locking Tire Chuck like this if it's compatible. I use my compressor often and twisting gets old fast.

Edit: The M12 doesn't look like it comes with an optional 12V adapter for when you are in a bind.

I have a spare mounted tire in my trunk when taking trips since BMW no longer mounts run-flats. https://bimmerzone.com/collections/b...ncy-spare-tire

Thanks, jmg, adding this to my next Amazon order. Since I take a lot of long trips in my G82, this is the exact recommendation I needed.

I'm thinking this may be the way to go. I know the sealant goo can ruin the TPMS sensor, but any time I've had a puncture, it was able to hold enough air without goo to get me to a tire shop so the portable compressor may be enough.

In the case of a blowout, that'd be the time to finally use BMW Roadside Assistance.

It's been 12 years since the last time I had a spare in my car, and 4 years since we traded the last car in the fleet equipped with one. Not concerned at all. The only time in that window I had a flat that wouldn't hold air at least for a while was when I broke two wheels (and bent the other two) on an improperly-installed plate over road repairs, so even if I had a spare I would have still been screwed.

I did buy one of these inflators recently, and it turned out to be really convenient when my wife's car picked up a drywall nail. Quick top-up each morning and it was good to go until we could schedule a repair. Bought my parents one for Christmas, as they take a lot of long driving trips, and their new car doesn't have a spare either.

One of those portable battery powered compressors would actually be super useful in the boat….

I am trying to multitask my purchases.

I use it everywhere... even to blow up a SUP in a pinch. I even stopped using my air compressor in my garage. Why run a long hose to all 4 wheels, these are just more convenient. Long drives, track days, overlanding etc.

How is everyone fixing the spares down so it doesn’t slide around in corners and upon acceleration/braking? if at all I guess - maybe only in trunk when packed for a longer trip?

I used ratchet straps to the tie down points in my 340, but don’t think their in the G80 trunk. Waiting to take delivery around new year and celebrating milestones of transport with parts! Spare is next on the list!
