Anyone know how the rain sensing windshield wipers work. Dose it sense rain through the glass or is there a sensor else where?

For most cars, there is a sensor where the review view mirror contacts the windshield.

My car insurance come with special windshield coverage so each claim I have to pay $500 deductible. It is still suck to pay. The cracks are always near the windshield wiper/ light sensors area. The body shop told me it may affect the light/wiper operation if they just fix the cracks.

Not to make anyone feel bad but the State of Florida requires all insurance companies to replace windshields at no cost to the customer.

Not to make the people of Florida feel bad but Florida has ridiculous insurance rates all up. It’s not really ridiculous given all the weather related risks but the point remains.

And I’m sure the rates account for the windshield replacement costs spread across the population too.

its global warming, the heat causes rocks to swell in size and increase in density at the same time pushing glass closer to its melting point.

I don’t think so…
You are correct that they have to cover the windshield replacement, but not with OEM glass.
I posted about this a while back. Progressive refused to cover OEM glass for my wife’s X3M40i (with HUD). I had to pay the $700 difference to get OEM glass (the vehicle is leased and BMW will not take a vehicle back off lease without OEM glass … unless the dealer doesn’t notice at the inspection).
I immediately switched both her X and my M3 to Amica. Recently had to replace the M3 windshield and there was no argument from them about getting OEM glass.

I use State Farm and have not encountered any pushback. I have heard of other people using other companies getting pushback but, in those cases when they stood their ground the companies relented. I socialize in a track community, and very few people report not getting no extra cost OEM glass on their late model cars.

I apologize about the (OEM) remark, but it just very rarely happens.

On the other insurance front: You are absolutely correct sir about the high cost of Homeowners and Windstorm insurance. Some of the highest in the nation. The two have been separated ever since Hurricane Andrew in 92. All but a few homeowner insurance companies in the southern half of the state dropped their windstorm (hurricane) coverage after that storm. Nowadays none of them offer it. To get windstorm coverage you have to buy standalone coverage from a very small group of dubious private companies, or join the state's "Citizen's Property Insurance Corporation". No matter which way you choose the rates are confiscatory. I just got the bill for the coming year. $2,500.

I'm sorry but Shangri-La just does not exist.

Agreed, I started paying for the windshield coverage directly from BMW at the time of purchase now. Pays for itself multiple times over every time.

No problem!
I just didn’t want anyone in Florida to be misled into thinking there was an obligation that the insurance companies cover OEM glass. In my case I escalated three levels to a so-called manager at Progressive, and they were steadfast in refusing to cover the cost. They also let me know that for any other damage they said that if cheaper non-OEM parts were available, they would only approve those. This was the reason that I immediately switched to another carrier.
Amica confirmed that their preferences is always to approve OEM parts if available.

Probably due to all the money they've been paying to Flo for those stupid commercials over the years.

I must have been cursed. Bad Juju Bwana! I just found a cracked windshield in my garage.
