Looking for initial post break in impression.

Got my car about a week ago and working slowly towards the 1200 mile break in. I’ve been taking it pretty easy so far. Got it slightly over 4k rpm’s a few times. Curious how much different it will feel when I can redline her.

In all seriousness, it depends on your speed tolerance. I came from an M2 and I was still blown away. Somebody coming from a Tesla Plaid though might not feel the same way. Post break in is a fun time. Be careful and try not to get any speeding tickets!

985 miles on mine. I go in a week from Monday. Can’t wait. This car is seriously quick in comfort under 6k. Can’t wait to hammer down in Sport Plus!

Yes, speed isn’t everything. My previous two cars were (simultaneously) a Model 3 Performance and a 997 Turbo S. So I am used to 3 second to 60 cars. But I am still impressed by the G80.

You're in for it. The car is SIGNIFICANTLY more dramatic in sport + with the pedal down to redline.

Just completed 1200-mile break in. During the break in first 300 miles I did not exceed 5k but I used every different setting. At 600 miles I did took it to 6k again used all the different settings for engine trans and suspension. I got the car back Friday. Besides the ability to rev another 1k more rpm, I do not think the car got any faster. If I shift the car at 6k, it feels as fast as before the break in service. So to me it is definitely a myth that service unlocks more power.

I think some people do not even take it to 6k during the break in and take it super easy, then when they get the car back and take it up the rpms like 6500 plus, they are shocked with how fast it is.

Good point. I’m coming from an F80 ZCP.

For sure does NOT unlock any more power. Agree the difference is just driving in baseline settings like normal car vs settings up and full throttle.
With that said the car is very fast and responsive and shifts gears very quickly.

Remember that break in instructions also include avoiding kickdown in addition to not exceeding 5,500 rpm.

Fun times after break in service when they unlock the second turbo!

This myth has been busted. It even says in the complete vehicle guide that no additional power is unlocked. I don’t think anyone here is under that impression or implying that.

However, the break in, even after 600 miles says not to go full throttle in gears 1-3. And before that no full throttle at all. Also, IIRC, in the vehicle guide it says not to use sport plus, but I could be wrong about that. So I’m looking forward to doing all of that way more often than the 1-2 times I’ve done it.

Nothing about sport + that I can recall. I used it all the time for what it's worth.

I did not follow the break in rules completely. I stick with the rpm limits and speed limits mentioned. After 600 miles I did full throttle the car few times but never exceeded the rpm limits mentioned. I shifted the car manually too. My belief is, there is no harm done by couple full throttle runs up to 6000 rpm after 600 miles. Out of 1200 total miles not even 20 miles under load. If this car can't take that, I don't know what to say.

My car is a manual. I’m looking forward to getting to the top of the rev range. Also interest in how the back end will grip from a dead stop and getting the back end to kick out for some giggles.

I was careful till break-in, and since, I've floored it in Comfort and 'plain mode'. I've discovered that there is a difference in 'Fast', 'crazy fast' and ...'stupid fast'. ...130 on the turnpike and it was not at its' limit, but it was enough for me. Enjoy.

I’ve never tried LC. On any BMW I’ve owned. The best I’ve done is left-foot pedal the brake and be ready with my right lightly on the accelerator for green.

Most of the time I ease on the accelerator for a second to let other cars “trying” get a car length ahead. And then start pushing. This is a lot gentler on the drivetrain and it makes the “lion toying with the gazelle” scenario more sportsmanlike.

The best case scenario is doing this on wet roads. The way M xDrive grabs with winter tires especially when you have some trained skill in handling anything that may happen; and are intimately familiar with the limits of the car and tires - it is gorgeous. I’m actually jealous of people in other cars because I’m sure it invokes incredulity and awe. I feel it when I see another G8X but that’s so rare.

Wet, cold roads and going uphill (with good tires)? Go flat out from a near standstill - I don’t have words to describe what M xDrive does and how it inspires so much confidence. Go. Do. This. It is f***ing awesome.

You gotta read your manual dude. No kickdown and it's 5500 not 6000.

Yeah it's truly something. I hit the governor on an early morning empty straightaway bridge on the outer banks. I couldn't believe it. It was legitimately scary how fast it got there.

What’s the purpose of “gentler on drivetrain”?
U saving it or something ?
