The screen would probably look 50% better without that ridiculous "kickstand".

Really disappointed BMW is headed in this direction. But with Tesla and other cars of their ilk being all the rage these days, I guess BMW has to answer to the demands of their consumers to preserve market share. Unfortunately it's the enthusiasts like us who suffer for it.

It's very simple. Tesla slap on ipads to save money, market accepted it and other manufactures followed. bottom line is to save money.

To some degree it's like big grilles. All the other manufacturers were going to them and I appreciated that BMW was resisting the group think, until they weren't. Different industries have different trends and for the most part eventually everyone conforms as it's determined to be the norm and the future by the industry.

They should reserve this hideousness for their electric cars, not the ICE cars. It looks purely like an afterthought. Let's hope they make it an option so we can get the 2022 dash on the 2023 if we want to.

Was able to get to see an i4 at the dealer today. Assuming the M will be the same. I still don't like it. The kickstand really ruins it, makes it look cheaper. They needed to bring the dash up to build it in better- like another brand *cough think Mb E class * MAYBE the M will get a nicer, kickstand lol.

Not sure what I'm going to do; we are all in the same boat, don't want to not get the car I want but I have to stare at that thing. I don't know. What a freakin position to be in.

**EDIT Not sure why pics are so blurry, not on my phone like that**

Speaking of the kickstand, what does it do? I would assume keep that corner from breaking/bending but is it mechanically attached to the dash? Or is it just ...there...for style? Just wondering if it has any utility. Your image from above and outside the windshield makes it look like the stand may not be necessary, as the screen doesn't look like it bows out from the dash that much.

So the kickstand is there because if it wasn't that top right part of the screen would have too much flex in it. It's just for structural rigidity, I would assume. It's drilled into dash or something. It doesn't move.

That looks like the car was designed without any instrument cluster or entertainment system.

And just as they were about to go to market, someone called out how ludicrous that was.

Which looked like it was followed by a trip to a local electronic store for a screen to screw into what they started off with.

Just think of the new iDrive 8 dash kick stand design as a weight saving idea....at least 20lbs reduction compared to old dash....

The more I see this setup, the more disgusted I become. I'm going to reserve my total judgement until I actually see a picture or video of it the MY23 G8x. I'm hoping that they somehow integrate it better or give it some kind of binacle to make it look like a dash board and not just a giant screen. If it looks like those photos from the i4...hard pass. I'll get my deposit back and move to another manufacturer.

Not looking good at all. I can deal with the exterior but not the interior.

I like screens in cars. I said it out loud at last. I don't know what it is, my inherent geekiness, a life spent in the world of technology, or something. I absolutely acknowledge that one of my favorite things about modern cars is being able to have a 256GB flash drive plugged in with 10,000 FLAC format songs available at all times...and screens are necessary to be able to scroll through that mass of music. I love how good the standard BMW nav system has gotten and I love it having directions in the HUD. The first car I bought had an AM radio stock and screens and all that stuff makes the car feel like the future we were promised, at least to a point.

I don't, however, like being required to POKE screens. I use the iDrive wheel and voice commands a lot more than I ever touch the screens. I use the HVAC controls A LOT. Wheel and voice integrate better with driving a car than poking screens does.

However. I may be a geek, but I was taught, way back in the dark ages of the 80's, that visibility and awareness are the most important thing when driving. You can't dodge a rogue Prius running a stop light if you don't see it or you aren't paying enough attention. I've never typed on a phone while the car was moving. If I have a coffee with me, I never sip it unless stopped. Etc... And in 35 years of driving, I've never hit anything.

We sat in the i4 and the iX at an auto show in January. From the driver's seat, the screen looks OK but all I could think about was "that's too much light and too many things being displayed to be that high up in my visual field while driving". The iX's screen, perhaps because it was so big, didn't seem as likely to be overwhelming as the i4.

When this screen is integrated into the dash as part of the original, initial design, it might be OK but I'm seriously thrilled that I got my car with it's two well-spaced, individual screens when I did instead of ending up with this setup.

Yeah, I think the kickstand is the new direction BMW is going with. Bleh. It's even in the new 7 series.

However, the kickstand in the X7 has a little more substance; it's not hollow in the middle like the one on the i4, still ugly.

I'm really hoping they do something different for M cars. But not holding my breath.

I'm thinking the new dash design, together with the carbon buckets, will give the G8x cabin a fresh and modern look.

Just think of the weight savings one gets from the "kickstand" design of the new dash!

Nailed it! Haha. They went the electronics store bought two iPads glued them together and stuck it on the dash and called it a day. Haha. I don't mind the two screens, but they needed to integrate it into the dash better. Not just slap it on there. For such an expensive car brand this just looks cheap, cause it is.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. They should've just left it alone. The lack of physical HVAC controls especially bothers me.

The current interior is perhaps the single biggest reason I have ordered an M4. The performance is awesome, but that can be found in other cars too. I happen to dig the exterior so that is a bonus for me. But when I first sat in a G83, I thought it was superb. Everything feels integrated and built-in, and I rather like that. I don't love the excess of buttons around the shifter, and I don't love the main driver display options, but those nitpicks aside it is near perfect for me. If my 22 order slips to a 23 with this screen, I am 100% out.

Agree that the screens should be integrated in dash instead of on it. Ugh.

One perk of this tablet screen sitting on top of instead of being incorporated into the dash, is that when it eventually craps out, it'll be easier to remove and replace. And I'm certain this thing will need replacing.

Only silver lining to this incoherent dash design.

Going to see an i4 tomorrow to get a in-person perspective. I am hoping for the M's they didn't just put a kickstand like the i4. The X7 & new 7 have a kickstand, but it is not and flimsy looking.
I agree with the grill thing. Being a F82 owner, I never liked the G8x grill and actually contacted multiple Porsche dealers for 911 instead of upgrading to G82. However I went to see G82 in person and you know what, grill doesn’t look that bad and the number of things G82 offers me in 85-90k makes much more sense based on my finances. I went ahead and ordered a G82. This car is giving me so much else that I can live with the grill.
