Car locks, unlocks, locks, unlocks... -- if you're standing about 5 feet away

Does anyone else have this experience? It seems like the key fob range is on a knife edge and if I put the fob on my garage shelf when I walk past and block the signal for a split second it arms, then after I walk by it disarms. Or if I'm talking to someone standing a couple feet from it with the fob in my pocket it just locks, unlocks, locks unlocks...

VERY annoying. Is it just me? this is very different than any other car with a fob I've ever encountered

I like it, but I had to remember to not carry my Keys on me in the garage. It is useful in practice though as it works well when you are out and about.

You neither unlock or lock your car, it does it.
Hard to trust, I know… but the proximity thing, it really does work.

Do not carry your keys in your pocket however in your garage or it will drive you nuts.

You can turn it off also, in settings.

I like it but be careful! I normally have the auto stop/start disabled but, on this occasion, I was running out of gas so I turned it on. On getting to the gas station, I got out of the car to pump the gas but the pump was acting up so I had to go pay inside the station. I walked away from the car like I normally do and didn’t bother confirming that the car locked itself.

To my surprise, I came back to see my car still running with the driver door unlocked. I’m not sure how it happened but my guess is that the car auto-shutoff what I stopped and I got out of the car thinking that I turned it off.

Also, if one the doors is open while you walk away, and you walk out of range, the car will not auto-lock. This happens when you have stragglers that wait until the car is fully parked before they need to find and put their shoes on.

Both your car battery and your key battery will discharge if you leave them in close proximity.aka do not leave them in or near your garage.

One of my unused keys discharged within 1.5 years despite being far from the car. But that’s not as bad as having to deal with a $2k drained Li-ion car battery.

Proximity unlock is a gimmick because you will touch your door handle to open the car anyway and that’s all you need. Lock as you walk away? Sure, can see the case for leaving that on.

Exactly, easy solution to this. Unlock on approach provides no extra convenience over unlocking when you touch the door handle.

My experience is different from yours. I programmed Comfort Access to automatically unlock upon approach but not to automatically lock upon departure. I offend approach the car car with two handfuls (for loading into the trunk), and the auto-unlock comes in handy.

How does auto-unlock help with the trunk? You still need to hit the button on the key or the tab in the trunk lid to open it. And it doesn’t matter if the car is locked or not, the trunk will open when you do either of those things (it might not be default but there is a setting for this and that’s how it works for me).

You’ll have to walk me through how it is helpful. You have to touch a button to open the trunk, and it will open with one touch regardless of the car’s lock state.

Auto unlock is useful for people that plan to open the car door and get in without touching the door handle ……. 😈

I'm guilty of using a stash of cheap fob batteries, already replaced 1 in the first 10 months ownership.
But I had no idea my car battery would be drained by leaving the fob in cupholder parked in garage. I don't like car locking in my home garage since I sometimes need to get in several times while preparing to leave much later in the day. Plus the OCD weird part of my brain thinks the mirrors folding with each lock/unlock during those days will wear out (not like I keep German mega depreciating cars past warranty, ha).
The super cold months turn my Comfort Access into an unreliable beast (thread somewhere on this forum), and touching door handle has left me standing in parking lot doing the touch/step away/touch slower/step away/yank on handle dance. Not as bad as my old Tesla which often required a call to service tech to unlock my car when the phone key went haywire.
Back to my M4...I'm thinking daily driving negates any parasitic drain from leaving fob in car parked at home?!

Apparently the car doesn't go into "deep sleep" if the fob's around as it's constantly talking to the key and expecting someone to touch the door handle to open the door.

It should be fine with daily driving, until one day it may not be. If you have a float charger at home, it should be good enough. As long as the battery doesn't deep discharge (extended storage?) and then it's properly shot.

Ok I get it. I think this was my misunderstanding then, I've had cars with proximity lock but not unlock without touching the door. So this will be the solution. Auto lock but not unlock. I do like the full prox in general, unless I'm standing near the car talking then it's absurd. But as folks have said, I gotta open the door anyway... or do i

Awesome thanks for the tips this has been driving me nuts.

Is the proximity key active for manual cars?

This is how mine has been set since the second week I had the car in March of 21. I love the proximity lock, but the unlock is obnoxious.

lol No, you’re not alone. Every slight passby I do the car either turns on the daylight running lights or if I get closer does the unlock lock thing. I’ve grown to like it like she’s begging me to hop in. Whether it can be coded to not do that or not be so sensitive I’m sure other members can chime in if possible.
