Help deciding between M3 Competition vs M3C Xdrive
Hi,
I have been going back an forth about getting an M3. I finally saw one in person and seem to be strongly considering it and called a bunch of dealers and was disappointed with the 12-16 month wait time for the M3C Xdrive. I happen to come across a dealer who has an open allocation for an M3C without the Xdrive. I live in WI and we do get a fair share of snow. I plan to use my X3 for the majority of the winter when it snows and use the M3C for mainly summer and maybe weekends in winter when there isnt much snow. I will be having performance tires on my M3C and dont want to buy winters if I can avoid it. My question is, would an M3C be enough to satisfy my need with its RWD or should I just stick with the M3C Xdrive? I do like speed and dont know if I can drive the M3C in winter with its performance tires at all (we do get cold weather from Nov to April). So I need to make a decision within 24 hrs. So would really appreciate your input and guidance in this regard. Thanks !!! Update: Looks like its smoke and mirrors. Now they r saying its just in the orderbank. Classic bait and switch. I guess Id have to get on the waitlist for 1 y for the comp X drive Last edited by Aalfred; 07-27-2022 at 10:25 AM.. |

I have the RWD comp and i did have a chance to order the x-drive at that time but i decided to opt for the RWD as i told my SA, "i don't need/want that". And he said, "good choice" lol.
However if i had to go back, i would just get the x-drive. Because you can switch to RWD anyway so you'll have the best of both worlds. After living with my tesla model 3LR for a couple of months now, and purchasing acceleration boost which brings my 0-60 to a consistent 3.7 or so, i totally get the appeal of AWD. There is almost nothing (aside from other teslas lol) that could take me off a line. There were times i ended up in the wrong lane at a light and i knew i had to get over immediately. Well i am undefeated in my holeshots lol. Stabbing the throttle from a light knowing you'll have immediate traction all the time is so satisfying. If i could do it over, i would have just gotten the x-drive. |

I'm in California and would pick the Xdrive.

Honestly, if you already have a vehicle that you can drive during inclement weather, I would choose a RWD car. Hell, I would do a base M3 with the stick. So you can have a fun daily that you can take people in and a car you can drive in the snow. An AWD SUV and an AWD sedan serve the same purpose, one is just taller and more practical. You also get the added bonus of a lighter vehicle that's more precise.

Thanks. I agree with all that you said and in a perfect world, i would get the Xdrive. But given the current situation, i can get an M3C allocation and maybe get the car in in 4 months or wait for the Xdrive in a order bank for the next 12-16 months to get a MY24 and prob more price increase. Other than the straight line speed 0-60, will i be missing out on driving characteristics and ride comfort ?

Given that you can turn xdrive off, I'm not sure what the purpose of the RWD comp is. Unless you are really really price sensitive there is almost no argument to get one.

Is it really 12-16 months wait just for an x-drive? If so, get the RWD lol. I waited 4 months for my RWD comp and i was going nuts after the 2nd month. I thought i could wait but i couldn't. Honestly, i think the x-drive is only beneficial if you have to drive it year round (although winter tires on RWD is almost as good), and 0-60 times. Other than that, basically the same damn thing. |

To your bigger question, the xDrive is the only version to get unless the price difference kills you.

X-Drive if you get snow and ice, although a dedicated winter setup with Wintrac Pro's / Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 will make a huge difference with traction and overall safety.

If you don't want to deal with getting a winter tire/wheel setup, considering switching the performance summer tires to good all-seasons. Lots of good things to say about the Continental DWS 06 Plus tires in snow at reasonable street speeds - they handle the typical snow conditions well enough. They're also pretty good in the summer as well. The only reason to get RWD over xDrive is if you plan on running drastically different wheel and tires sizes than stock. xDrive isn't as tolerant of that compared to RWD. If that's not the case for you, you won't be unhappy going with an xDrive M3C.

A Xdrive SUV like a X5 will not give you the same experience as a AWD M3. You are putting down power efficiently and reducing your chances to get into an accident on public roads in bad weather. Especially if you are going to carry family members. This car is a monster and AWD brings peace of mind.
You can always convert your M3 to a RWD, if needed. My pick is AWD with automatic and RWD with a manual. Also I think the AWD will hold its value better.

I couldn't wait 12-16 months for any BMW. But that's just me. But then again i am approaching 3 years since my deposit on the C8 z06 and i am looking at 12-14 months for my stingray (coming spring 2023). So if you have patience for your dream car, you can do it. If it's just a regular car to you, then get what can get now. I couldn't wait that long for an M car though. |

This as well. The OP's annual winter temps get below 30f. Summer tires on any car would be very dangerous at these temperatures regardless of snow/ice.

As to your dilemma...Wait and get the xDrive or call out the salesman for their Shenanigans. As to driving in real snow, I would not take any performance car, xDrive or not, with summer tires out if the temp has a chance to hit the tire changeover point. (44 degrees iirc?) Winter rims and snow tires, you can drive wherever as long as you clear the snow. So depending on where you are in Cheesehead land, your summer ends and winter begins in what? Late September? Either way, these are great problems to have and either choice you won't regret. Don't count out the RWD M4 Manual non-comp. They can be insane with the right mods....
