I know there was a roadmap of the cars that would get the iD8 to iD8.5 upgrade but I believe the 3/4 series weren't listed on there. Do we have any more clarification on that? I was hoping he'd ask, but he didn't.

They haven’t said when 8.5 will come to the iDrive 8.0 3- and 4- series cars but I would think it would happen by the 2025 model year (for new builds) and be updatable in the older 8.0 cars by Q1/Q2 2024.

That would give them some time to roll it out in the 7/new 5/X7/X6/X5 first.

what happens when a femto unlocked car gets an idrive 8.5 over the air update? will it brick the car or require a re-unlocking process? i've seen that happen before in the idrive 7 generation with our cars and in the prior gen idrive in the supras.

According to the video he said all Linux based cars would go to 8.5 and all Android based cars would go to 9.0. I don’t have my M3 yet so I don’t know if the G80’s are Linux or Android based. No timeline was provided for either one.

Yep.. subscribing. Very curious if a 23 g80 will be able to update to 8.5 without much headache. Seems nicer in the demo than the 8.0.

In the article they say “ Based on our knowledge, BMW intends to start production of the i4, iX, X5, X6, X7, and 7 Series with iDrive 8.5 from July 2023. The latest Operating System requires a new head unit, therefore it won’t be offered as an over-the-air update for existing models.”

That’s a shame. I like the layout of 8.5 much better than id8 that’s on my ‘23 M3.

I will say the automatic function of id8’s hvac works well. I keep it set to 70 and it heats and cools as needed without any input. It will also turn on the vented and heated seats as necessary without user input.

Looks like they're using a new chip, which would make the 8->8.5 upgrade unlikely.

Yup, looks like it because that’s what makes the screen transitions and response time of the voice control faster.

No 8 -> 8.5 upgrades.

I like idrive 8 overall but the lag is so trash. Lag with climate control is fucking stupid, they shouldn’t have removed the buttons for it if that’s what was going to happen. The family Volvo has climate control in the infotainment but no lag so I don’t mind it.

Let me preface what I'm about to say with this - I love tech but I also don't know shit about tech.

Having said that - up until the Samsung S23, every single Samsung phone before that had different SOCs in different markets and ran the exact same Android OS and Samsung One UI on top of it. Not to mention, every different PC manufacturer runs a different chips/processors/graphic card combination yet they all run Windows just fine.

Apples and oranges? Maybe.

iD8 and iD8.5 are just different skins on the same OS (Linux). Why would there be incompatibility with a different chip?

If, in fact, this is BMWs excuse; it's a piss-poor one. Sounds like cost savings and laziness.

The chip with current iD8 sucks. It's laggy.

If I'm going to be laggy regardless, I'd rather be laggy on iD8.5.

I’m not entirely convinced that 8.5 is materially that much of an improvement in terms of UI. Other than tweaking how the onscreen climate controls are presented and overlaying a scrollable secondary tile over a full screen map, I don’t see much else. Besides, i might be in the minority, but I prefer to use the idrive controller for 99% of the functions. Not sure how much of 8.5 the controller will be compatible with.

Fwiw, I don’t fine 8 laggy at all. Works perfectly fine for how I interact with it.

Agreed, no idea what's so laggy about it, never had an issue with any lag so far.

That wasn't my understanding based on previous news. The way I read it was that 9.0 is an all-new Android Automotive-based OS running on new hardware. While 8.5 was a re-skin on the existing hardware and (QNX?) OS meant to look and feel like 9.0.

This UX, especially the climate control, is what iDrive 8 should have been if physical buttons were being removed.

And look, there is a physical hood over the driver’s portion of the screen. Doesn’t that start to seem more cohesive?

Incremental tweaks over this demo interface, bringing back key physical buttons, and a better hood over the driver instrument cluster and it isn’t terrible anymore.

iDrive 8 will be remembered as the painful transition to something approaching being worthy of replacing iDrive 7.
