Accident - not smart

Without thinking, I opened my door right into a passing car, The damage seems limited to the driver's door and the front quarter panel. Any guesses on time and cost for the repair? My guess is too long and too much.

Wow. Hope everyone is ok!

Would be interesting to see pics of the damage to the unibody.

It looks like no damage under. No damage to sill, interior door panel, mirror. Window works fine. Mirror folds, etc. It looks like just the door and quarter panel

Was it… a kid on a bike?

If so, it’s a warrantable defect. BMW should have TSB about this by now.

🤣

Ok, seriously though - that sucks.

I'm sure the warranty covers this. It was just a little Nissan, or maybe it wasn't my fault. I was in front of my house. What's the guy doing driving in front of MY house

I know it was an accident - but people like you piss me off as my vehicle would also be damaged. Where I live, last I checked, the driver hitting the door would be responsible. Go figure!

You're very lucky you weren't hurt.

Could also be damage to the cowl.

I dont think anyone purposely wants to cause an ACCIDENT. Shit happens. Its not like you havent made a mistake when driving too.

I know that rak299 didn't do it intentionally as most M car owners are very careful to take care of their cars. However, most people that I see that open their doors in front of me just don't give a damn. You can tell they are arrogant and want everyone else to watch out for them. The law that makes the other driver responsible makes it even worse. In a lot of situations (on narrow roads with cars parked on both sides) it is impossible to drive far enough to the left to avoid the door of a coupe.

The other thing that I see a lot of that pisses me off is that people are too lazy to turn the steering wheel to make a round left hand turn at an intersection. They cut the corner with a diagonal line and cut you off as you are you are approaching the intersection. I can't count how many times I have to stop short to avoid hitting them as they cut across my lane.

My son is an avid cyclist in Los Angeles. I worry more about door fools than him getting run over. If op did that to a cyclist, the rider would be in the hospital

It's a 15mph, narrow street. I did look, but other driver came around the corner at speed.

The wife's 240 had similar damage, and the shops that gave me a quote all said that they'd just replace the door. BMW won't supply door skins any more. IIRC around $5K, so add on the fender and perhaps six or seven, all-in.

Ooops, OP, is in California, so probably nore like $8K.

I’ve come close to making the same mistake more than once.
We’re thinking about work, kids, whatever and just open the door.
Sucks you got caught. Could have been worse.
