Wind noise on highway

Just noticed this noise on my M4 base. Seems to come from the air vent right beneath the windshield. I can hear whooshing wind noise at highway speed (60mph). It doesn't seem rhythmic, sounds like it's leaking wind or something. Is anyone else experiencing the same?

It's still a car based on a 3/4 series so it's not going to have the same fit and finish as something like a Porsche. There is going to be a little bit of wind noise. I have a small amount coming from the front driver side door at the A pillar. It's barely noticeable but it's there.

If it's a "whoosh" and it is not considerably louder than the general wind noise the rest of the car has, you will have a hard time getting a dealer to address it. If it's a whistling noise, then it's a different story.

If you want to try to locate it, try putting painter's tape over the windshield, side glass, mirror, etc. and peel away little by little to isolate it. Also, try closing all of the vents, toggling the climate control, etc. to see if it is HVAC related.

Porsche does not have any superlative fit or finish either (anymore?). My friend's latest gen 911 CS had rattles and squeaks in random places that were very hard to fix. The dealer would fix one and introduce 2 others in the process. And then the first one would also come back.

I haven't driven a Porsche in awhile. I just remember how air tight my dad's 944 was. You close the door and your ears could feel the pressure.

On my 2nd Macan GTS, and both were/are still tight as drums after 2 years of ownership.

My Mercedes Benz C450 on the other hand was a rattle trap....

Just got my 2021 M4. It has a pretty damn loud air flow leak type sound at, what might be, the lower windshield vents. Like OP. Anyone have any insight? Please!

My 997.2 Porsche 911 GTS Cabriolet had squeaks and plenty of rattles like no other car I ever owned. I thought it was part of the "Porsche Ownership Experience" until one of the techs told me it was typical of Porsche's poor QC. My car also died on the highway twice due to a faulty main engine computer module, and it took the dealership 3 weeks to sort it out. During their service, the car was returned to me covered with bird shit, water marks from them washing it a week before I picked it up, and a damaged engine cover from when they had to pull the engine for the repair.

Sorry, but I am no longer a fan of the Porsche hype! I'm not trying to jinx my current situation, but my M4 so far has been flawless!

This might sound crazy but I’m serious…. Roll your window down and stick your hand in that gap between your mirror and your car. Like the “circle” area formed by the aero thing on your mirror cap and the base of the mirror.

I noticed the same thing while driving once. It’s literally the wind making a noise going through that area. Stick your hand there and it goes away. Dead serious lol

Ha! I’ll try that. Thanks for the tip. Currently the car is up on a lift getting the cats cut out. Figured that’s one way to fix the air sound. Lol

Quick update. So I pressed hard on the outside weather stripping of the windshield. I laid some towels underneath my fist to make sure I don't break the glass or paint. But after that the noise is more or less gone.

Weirdly the outside weather stripping really sticks out a lot. I'm not sure why BMW did this. Probably the part sticking out is generating the noise for me

I am bringing mine in for this same issue. I have a squealing driver window and a very distinct hissing (almost like its the speaker) or air leak on the passenger side that will almost drown out a podcast or talk/sports radio it can be so loud. Ive tried turning off ASD, radio, a/c, and it's still there, so thinking it could be an air leak. Any pics of where you isolated your issue to might be helpful.

My driver seat also squeaks over any bump in the road. Not sure if that is fixable or something they can re-grease some bolts for.

Was able to pick up pretty easily on an iPhone video too.

Did this fix your issue long term? I have a whistling noise from passenger side. I think from passenger mirror?? Hear it over 50mph.

Is that poor design? Even my wife’s ford has vents to relieve door closing pressure! 😀
