I just changed my tires. I lost out in the tire lottery. So I figure I give Michelin pilot spot 4s a try. I’m just curious do people in here actually break in their tires. I barely got 9500 miles on the P-zero. I would hate to waste 5% of it breaking it in.

Break in? I mean people will scrub them in some before going hard. But that's a few min of heating them up.

This is a serious situation. I hope you've allocated enough money from your savings to get some Formula 1 tire blankets before you go out for a drive, because the car will be undrivable otherwise.

Break-in is just a warning for you to realize that the tire won’t give you the most grip in acceleration, cornering or braking until the surface layer is cut through. It is for your safety.

You can go WOT as soon as your tires are installed. It just won’t be as performant as you’d see 500 miles in.

9500 before they were worn out?
That’s not normal is it?

In addition to the break in miles the heat cycling mileage will build up. Typically tires that have been heat cycled last longer than those that have not. On the car cycling is for 100 miles.

Tire Rack offers this as a service which was confirmed by BFGoodrich's own tests to be as effective as on the car cycling. The Goodrich test confirmed about 50% more mileage. So if they are right you invest some use to gain more use.

Not my M4 but my Z4 got 19,000+ on Michelin PS4S tires. Only tires I wear out under 10,000 are NITTO NT-01 on the Cobra-R. They are done in the 9,000 range but are soft 100 treadware gumballs

I’m not sure. I mean my hellcat I barely can get 6k on nitros 555r2. They were worn down to the wear bars. I’ll be honest, I rip the car every time I take it out.

Not needed for street tires. Heat cycling is only required for r-compound tires or slicks. Of course always be cognizant of driving conditions, temp, pressures etc. Always a good idea to build up some heat in tires before going WOT.

Better than the 6500 down to wear bars I got out of one of my P Zeros. As to breaking in new tires, I kept it under 110 breaking them in today.

Heat cycling tires just hardens them. That's why they last longer ... they also don't work as good the harder they get.

I’ll get new rears just because.

I bet people with competition package M3 wear out tires faster. You can just mash the throttle

Not totally on topic, but during a recent autocross event, I realized that dash actually tells the tire temperature. the course that day apparently had a lot more right turns than left as my right tires were around 20 degrees warmer than the left.

No way, really?
I gotta look for that as that is wicked cool.
What’s a good tire temp to feel like you’re getting max traction

How does it know tire temp?

Haha mash at the light, mash at the turns, and from 30-50 rolls lol. I can’t wait to tune this thing. Curious how long the tires will last then…

You can call up a number of info displays on the M Mode screen just like on the standard BMW's screens. Not sure what senses the temp - PSI sensor? - but it works pretty good.

I have temp/pressure on the right side of the main instrument cluster at all times in Sport display mode. It's been educational noting temps vs tire performance on the Pirellis and both sets of PS4's that I have (AS and S).

When the PS4S's get to around 90 degrees and hotter, they're clearly happy campers. I don't know what the "official" optimum temp, but from the driver's seat I recall the Pirellis wanting a bit more heat but it's been a year and a half since they were on the car so I may not be remembering them that well.

The AS tires pick up heat more slowly than the S's do, in similar ambient temps and conditions, and they don't feel right if they get too warm.

Cool thanks for that.
I’ll see if I can notice any difference around 110-120 on the pirellis. Going to keep those on until they are done and then get some Michelins.

Haven’t really done too much cornering in the m3c, but I have pirlellis also on a Porsche which has seen some spirited driving. I guess I just don’t get to the limit very often because I think that the car handles pretty well on the much maligned pirellis. I’ve had very few instances of lack of grip, a couple times on some sharp S curves at around 60-70mph I noticed the backend feel a little tiny bit unsettled, but I usually head into corners at a speed I feel confident at and then push it on the way out. Someday I’ll make it to a track and try to find out what it feels like to go too far.

Eventually when the tires wear on both cars I’ll have a go with the Michelins, but I suspect I just don’t drive hard enough to notice much on the road.

More data is more better though!
Thanks for the info.
