For Those Who Had Parts Installed at Port....Good Job or Not?

So my question is for all who've had parts/accessories installed at port, what was the quality of work like? Did they do a good job? Do you wish you had just ordered the parts and installed them yourself?

I ask because I'm really liking the M Performance front lip and how it would look great with the carbon fiber exterior pkg., but since I won't be getting my new M3 until Oct/Nov when its starting to get cold outside, I don't think I'm going to want to be installing this myself out on the driveway during that time of year. I also like the idea of having the front lip already on the vehicle come delivery, so I can immediately take my car to the PPF shop.

Now I've also read the M Performance front lip is not the easiest to install, and requires ordering additional clips & adhesive....so maybe if the work at port is decent, I'll just pony up the money and let those guys install the lip....

Thoughts?

chicagofan00 installed his own lip. I know he said it was a pita. If you get it installed at the port, they will install it with Betalink. As for the extra parts, that you need to order, I'm not sure about that. Usually they come with everything. I'd imagine that most people are just installing them with the standard 3M tape and hardware that comes with the lip. The dealer, or the port, will definitely use the betalink. I ordered all of the M carbon parts, this past week, and the lip wasn't in stock, so they refunded my money, now, I'm going to have to wait to reorder because I will be out of town. My side skirts, get delivered, today, and I don't think those require anything fancy to install them, except a pop rivet tool. Let chicagofan00 answers, hes installed his.

NOBODY does a better job than port for the OEM M Performance Parts.

Not the dealer. Not your detailer. Not your body shop. Not you.

They have the best training, most experience and the most practice installing these parts. My (very large) dealer had never even seen a G8X with an M Performance rear wing until mine was delivered.

And the cost of labor is the cheapest (even cheaper than your own time since you can afford a G8X).

And you get the parts added to your window sticker.

And you get full vehicle warranty on the parts and the install - no fighting with the dealer on say a water leak into the trunk or rust developing there because your buddy did a poor install.

And you get the best resale because the car was delivered like that with no question about the quality of install or authenticity of the parts when you sell.

Insurance coverage for the parts is easier.

Etc. etc.

Good to know! And all good points when it comes to port installing your accessories/parts....Thanks! Yeah, money wasn't the main issue for me, it's the quality of work I care about most.

Last I checked, it costs $2,695 to have the M Performance lip installed at port....but would I be at the mercy of the dealership if they decided to pad that price somewhat? I would think not since you said the lip would be listed on the window sticker.

Are they charging for port install now? Last car I had done was a MPPSK into a F series 440. Negotiated a discount to invoice $3200 down to $2500 on the package. As it was part of the original deal the port installation was free.

If it had been done afterward by the dealer there would have been an install price.

No you would not be at the mercy of the dealer. It is part of the MSRP of the vehicle.

I had the front lip installed at the port and it was absolutely perfect.

Not separately, but bundled together since one can order the lip alone online for $2,047.23 (List $2,580), and the port installed price is $2,650 total.

Thanks!

I'm actually finding a total price of $2,650 for the M Performance lip installed at port. Is that what you paid, and did it delay deliver of the car much?

The attachment contains accurate prices for 2022 (and possibly remains the same for the 2023 model year). These are what get added to your MSRP - dealers cannot pad anything as it's transparent pricing. They can easily pad labor cost if you tell them to install it after the fact in their service center (and it will definitely be a lot more expensive than doing it a port).

There is a labor component already built into the port pricing but it's very small to the point I think it's a steal. So yes, you'll see the part by itself available for purchase a tad cheaper from the parts catalog.

The cost sounds right. My car would not be a good example for delay for port installed options. I had two stop sales and my car sat at the port for a month waiting on those. I doubt the lip delayed mine at all.

Port install is effectively like having it installed at the factory. It will be done by the book and would fall under warranty should an issue creep up. As others have said, the other benefit of port install is that it will be on the window sticker and can be amortized if leasing.

And as was mentioned, installing on your own is a pain in the ass, especially if not wanting to remove the front bumper. It's a fair amount easier when you remove the front bumper as you can easily get to the screws in the wheel well for the two side pieces.

Additionally, I got these delivered, today. And the box is 96"x14"x12" no where to put it. So, the logistics of the trash that this stuff is packed in, is also a pain in the rain.

The 963m wheels drive me crazy. They want 2k more then what the parts places are charging and you don't even get the factory wheels/tires which are still 4k+ in value.

FWIW This is the money part of my sticker. The MPPSK & chrome M tips were port installed.

EDIT: The products were discounted to invoice so there was no hidden install cost at the port. That was in 2017 & maybe things have changed. Last two cars had no port install items.

That's a VERY good point. Port install is basically free. If I had waited to order the part and have the dealer install my wing, they would have charged for it. With port install, I just paid for the part.

My SA sent me a "confidential" file with the components of prices for VIA options. For the CF front lip on G82 it's Parts $2480+Labor $95+Revenue=$2770 total. So I mean there does exist some room for negotiation on that revenue part...but not much given that the parts price is fixed. But I feel like the labor is indeed cheap af and it's already a nice deal anyway.

While there isn't an install line item for port installed pieces, the price of them is more than what they charge at the parts counter or even somewhere like IND. The assumption would be that the higher price tag basically gets you that "free" installation. Although I'm sure the labor rate at the dealership would of course bump you past what the port installed option is if you decide to later buy via the parts counter and have the service techs install it.

The installation of the side skits is easy, just need a plastic rivet tool. I installed the skirts and rear winglets took less than 90 minutes. The worst part was getting some of the old rivets out on the side skirts, most come out easily. You can either drill them or use a punch and knock them out. I used a punch with a point and a somewhat "manly" hammer.

I bought betalink for the front lip then used 3M tape isntead.
