Agreed, the lasers on this car are insane. Subjectively, I'd say even better than in the G05 I had before.

Soft glass

As a few others have said the glass is really soft and chips easily. I saw a few posts on this and people responded to hat all glass chips. But I have been driving cars for almost 40 years, and have not seen anything like this front window and how delicate it is.

On the F8X, BMW uses thin glass for weight savings. It's probably the same case for the G8X. I've cracked a few windshields. I just use insurance and eat the deductible.

Is there a way to get the tach on the HUD without going into sport/track mode?

I don't thinks so. It's kind of annoying how they didn't make that a separate setting like in the F80.

I've been hammering on about this for a while. Started a thread to get more of us to complain to BMW: https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1856760

I really hope/think this could simply be a software upgrade.

The thread looks to have died awhile back. That said, I would like the option of a smaller tach as well in non M mode. The tach is too damn big in M mode along with everything else in my opinion.

Imagine if automakers opened this kind of thing up the way you can replace your smart watch faces? They could still curate and authorize and charge for them if they wanted to make a few extra bucks, but imagine the range of awesome graphics we could see? Classic BMW orange analogue gauges? KITT mode? 737 dashboard? 1990 Cadillac Allante retro-modern cluster? The range of possibilities are epically awesome.

I concur.
Even with the position set to the lowest setting without cutting off the bottom display, the M mode HUD display is quite distracting.
Maybe I need to raise the seats?

I thought about that too. Great idea indeed.
I wouldn't mind paying $100 or a little more for a new gauge design.

Indeed, it needs people to submit follow up posts to keep it alive. 😁 And agreed on the tach's hugeness. With the Sport HUD you can choose the smaller tach, but it looks dumb. But the hockey stick is way too damn big. I don't see why BMW couldn't enable some kind of scaling feature to shrink it a bit.

This would be BADASS. It must be regulations that prohibit this, otherwise I feel like we'd see this. But changing up the cluster every now and then would be really interesting.

I'm fairly certain that regulations only state that speed and warning lights need to be visible/clear; they don't dictate the exact design or other limits.

I'm also fairly certain that most manufacturers -- including BMW -- are insanely protective of their own design and IP and closed-system and would be aghast to letting hacker developers openly tinkering with the dashboard UI. Consider how long/hard it's taken to allow Apple and Google to integrate their UIs into iDrive. (Granted, there's more variety and controls through that interface; just reporting on engine and road speed should be a lot easier.)

Car software can be coded, power plants, networks and countries can be hacked by some nerdy kids. And nobody managed to access the programming of such Dashboard? Hard to believe actually.

I would 100% pay for options like this. I'm not a programmer or anything, but can't imagine it takes that long to do. Unless you need government approval from a safety stand point?

Software design and development is my "day job" (nights and weekends too sometimes), and because my little company has built a few healthcare apps, I deal a lot with web application security. In the case of an Instrument Cluster being modifiable/configurable, BMW could easily make this happen while scoping any changes only to the Instrument Cluster and keeping those changes away from the internet.

For example, they could allow "code" to be written and injected, but they could require that only physical connections to the OBD port are allowed (i.e. no remote network connection), and that code could be walled off from any other part of the car such that only the instrument cluster is affected.

They could go a step further and create a graphical user interface (GUI) that allows us to change colors/layout/etc based on whatever they pre-configure. Perhaps using a smartphone app while plugged into the OBD port, they could allows us to change background color to whatever pre-defined options they allow. User doesn't write/inject code, they just toggle inputs.

This is purely hypothetical, as I don't program cars. But the same principles of scoping/walling off what can be configured in any software app could apply to this kind of feature. That nobody has been able (insofar it seems) to "hack" the Instrument Cluster could be a testament to how BMW has walled it off to prevent nefarious coders from doing bad things.

Quite a different motor but the i can change the dials in my wifes Volvo XC60 so cant see why given the available technology we cant have a few options thrown in anyway with an option to customise it.

It's a great thread, I'm learning a lot. I just wish I had my G80 so I could contribute. Instead they just keep delaying my production date, it'll probably be a year from when I placed my order before I get my car🥲

I replaced my windshield on my G80 and previously on my M2C twice. I had two to three chips every time I went to the Canyons with my G80. Just don't follow too close lol. If you can PPF your windshield.

I learned that there's one button to rule them all - "them" being the windows. Not sure how I didn't see this earlier.

Makes me feel ill just thinking of the stylish designs some would come out with.

Think BMW stock price would drop 10% on that announcement.

If you set the HUD to reduced mode the tach in the HUD will collapse into a single line right above the speedometer and be maybe 1/5 the size. It's not as dramatic looking as the full tach, but gets the job done. And it's a setting that has to be adjusted only once, so you always get reduced mode HUD in M-mode until you change it.

I drive in M-mode probs 80% of the time in a G80 MT, I like having the tach in the HUD without being the distracting monster the regular mode is. Also, reduced mode collapses the speedometer+tach+speed limit icon into one widget and leaves the rest of the space normal for the media scrolling, phone etc.
