Article on adaptive headlights

Watched a segment on the Today Show this morning talking about the headlight topic we all on the forums follow about adaptive headlights and the red tape that hasn't allowed it in the U.S. yet. The article doesn't have the demonstration video that the TV broadcast showed with an Audi using the adaptive light tunneling but at least it's getting some national attention and maybe someday we'll get an update for our cars.

I have adaptive headlights.

If you have laser lights, and iDrive 7, you can have it coded it remotely. You will lose the coding with BMW’s software updates but you can have it coded again in a half hour. I pay $100 for 2 cars for recoding about once a year to codemybimmer.ca

iDrive 8 is locked down and I’ve not heard of this being coded there.

I did the BimmerCode coding myself easily enough on iD8.

Do you have to pay everytime to have it re-coded? My car wants to do its second update in the last few months and I have been putting it off because I don't feel like re-doing all my Bimmercode stuff

...no software update for me right now either, because I don't want to have everything re-coded. part of it is laziness, I readily admit.

but, I don't think I'm missing much either...

I haven’t done really any coding on this platform but it seems silly that you couldn’t just save settings and reapply them after an update. Seems like someone could make some good money if they sold a kit that could take a backup of the current car status then push it back to the system after an update

Our headlights already move, so I think all your missing is the part where the lights stay bright on one side and reduce brightness on the other while traffic passes. Idk how much effort that is really worth, personally.

You’re already getting the headlights tracking the wheel rotation, and the auto high beam works great imo, actually better than Porsches ime, it’s more sensitive and quicker to activate deactivate.

Porsche’s err’s on the side of caution and it works well, but takes too long to come back to high beam.

It’ll be nice if Congress passes a law to enable the feature… but I wouldn’t expect much.

They are still arguing over who and who isn’t a slave.

It’s so damn funny. I wonder what’s worse letting adaptive headlights be a thing in the USA or just drive around with your brights on 24/7 and blind people. Bureaucrats are the dumbest people in this country.

It’s hard to describe how they work, until you see them in action. Then you don’t want it any other way.

You can see in the top pic, the beam splits around the vehicle and keeps the sides of the road illuminated without blinding the driver in front of you. And the left high beam shuts off as a car passes. Then comes back on and resumes.

Yea that actually is some pretty cool tech.
You’d think they’d approve it since it could only save lives but we are talking about our .gov lol.

True. Nothing that possibly makes sense, anyway.

It's $50/car to recode.
