why are you or will you sell your g8x
Just wondering, what are some of the reasons people are selling their g8x. Right now especially since the wait it still long for many people in many areas.

I sold mine because I was able to get the car I ordered before I ordered my G82 (992). Once I realized I could get the other car I sold mine when prices were still essentially MSRP for used low-mile cars.

Seems to me a lot of people likely paid over MSRP and see the market starting to slow and their values plummeting and are likely trying to salvage any semblance of not going upside down. Just my assumption based on the timing of it all .
Or they upgrade for a Porsche lol

I had mine for nearly two years and was just ready for a change. Absolutely loved my M3 and all the mods I did to it though. I always get the itch for something new after 2-3 years. Been that way since my very first car. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I dont have any immediate plans to sell however I am considering selling the G82 for an M2 that i had custom ordered. The reason being the M2 will have the bucket seats as well as the MP HAS kit from factory and the alcantara steering wheel. My G82 doesnt have any of those.
Now its not even just options as for me i just prefer smaller cars. I wanted to try the M4 and i'm in a financial place where i can without it affecting me much at all and it was nice to be in the big brother M car for once. However its just too big for me and i am not in love with the car. Now theres nothing saying i will actually get the M2 as the final goal for myself is a GT3 as new as possible. Ideally a 992.2 but if i cant swing that or if ADMs are too much than it will be either a 992.1 or a 991.2. Those are two cars that i would buy and sell the G82 for as soon as i am able and i'll completley forget about the M2. Thats just where my priorty is. The BMWs are just transition cars for me. They are fun and i'm enjoying my time, but my goal is to get myself back into a Porsche GT car. |

You know it's funny...I go through LOTS of cars. I don't exaggerate when I say I have had 35+ in the past 15'ish years. Many BMW's (M's) and AMG's and a few higher tier cars. I would always read in posts like the above, 'oh I don't see myself getting rid of the m3 until I can get a 911' or 'I will keep m3 until I can upgrade to a 911' etc....but truly I always wondering WTF is the big deal with 911's.
So a year or so back I got one. 992 911 4S. Great car but no different than numerous others that could keep me entertained for no more than 6 months - 1 year. I got rid of it after 6 months and got myself a v10 R8...which I kept about a year. Then had a M850 and F Type R a the same time for about 6 or so months (m850) and 4'ish months the F Type until I got the new G80 M3 which I currently have (since 4'ish months). I REALLY don't understand the hype with 911's. I feel like it's the image of it that appeals to people and don't get my wrong, it's a nice driving car but certainly not the 'be all end all' everyone seems to make it out to be. At 200K that I spent on it, it didn't even feel much 'special' since they are so common where I live. I enjoy the M3 more than I enjoyed that in many ways. Not saying M3 is a better car, just a different car, but I don't think anyone's life is going to change dramatically if they do 'upgrade' from M3 to the 911 like people always seem to make it sound like. One wonderful thing about the 911 was that it was the only car I didn't lose any money on changing out of it so frequently and on one odd occasion due to market timing I made 15K on my AMG GTS. But my Aston Vantage left me with an almost 40K hit when I got rid of it after about a year. So one thing I can say about the 911 is that the value retention prospect is unbeatable for sure. But honestly, if I am spending 200K+ on a car, I want it to be somewhat rare and make me feel special which the 911 just didn't do, but the R8 and Aston did. The m3 cost me around 150K with all the neg I had accumulated (133K asking) and yes it also doesn't make me feel 'special' even though I see less of it than the 911, but at least I feel like I didn't spend 200K+ for it. So it's a great car for what it is in the bracket it is in. I guess I am fixating on the emotional/raw appeal aspect of the 911 only and now the great driving abilities and performance (which are excellent bar none), but for me the car has to have that visceral, emotional appeal that turns heads. Maybe it was a simple 4S and not a Turbo S or a GT 911 and that's why. I do plan to get either a Turbo S or a GT at some point so will answer that doubt too. But at the GT3 price point my preference would be to get a Lamborghini or Ferrari of some kind first. Anyway, all that to say in my long winded way, there is no reason for anyone to hum and haw over 911 if you're rolling in M3 and similar vehicles anyway because the 'jump' is not all what it's made out to be. At least wasn't for me. Do I miss the 911? Sometimes yes, but ONLY reason is it's a vehicle I didn't see myself losing $ on after driving for a while. Even the R8 gave me a bit of a hit in my 1 year ownership but man driving that felt more of an occasion each time than the 911 ever felt. Just some food for thought. The tail-end of my lease resulted in this question hitting me like a brick. I had zero thoughts about moving to a different car for the entire run of my lease until about mid-December. With interest rates as high as they are, it was a different question than it would have been a few years ago. My lease residual percentage wasn't that high (or that low) so the buyout price was an amount I could just pay rather than consider financing it (I'm just an DINK IT manager, not someone who could afford a GT3).
What I got hit with was a huge pull towards giving the X-Drive G82 a try. There are a couple of not-terribly-priced 2022's available in my area. I figured if I didn't end up liking it, I could swap back to an MT down the road. I even sent my sales human an email to explore the concept. After a few days of no response on the email (no idea if he was actually working or not), I decided to just be done with the question and sent in my payoff a month early. Then we got snowed and iced in for a week. The city does nothing with our local roads and it was an utter mess. Could I have taken my car out during that week safely? Probably. But with folk sliding down our road, I just didn't trust that I'd be able to safely react to other people in it. I went to the store while the roads were piles of slush and random ice on Thursday, and the car was very sketchy until I made it to the main roads. And then everything melted on the roads yesterday and I was able to go for a good long drive after work. All was well again and I was left with nothing buy joy after the drive. When I first decided to swap my 2006 RSX-S that I'd owned since new for a BMW in 2013, the entire point was to get something more comfortable with AWD that, along with having the right tires, could deal with my commute up and down the big hill in Portland better than the no-traction-control FWD RSX-S. I quickly went through 3 AWD 3-series BMWs and was never entirely satisfied with them, and my work left downtown so the hill wasn't an issue anymore. The DCT in the M2C didn't make me happy, along with many things about that car, but it was my first M car and I loved as many things as I didn't like. I spent my last year with that car wishing it was a manual, which is why I bought my Frog. After some break-in time with the not-quite-stellar MT in my M3, I was home again. The folk on this board who CAN afford Porsches never quite seem to get that for many of us, these cars aren't the stepping stones, they are the brass ring. Not as good as a GT3? Ok, that's fine. Folk who can't afford an M3 don't refuse to buy a Civic Sport because it doesn't match the M3 and I don't fault my $76k M3 for not matching a $200k GT3. I fault it for a few things compared to the Blackwings, but I fault the Blackwings for not matching the M3 and M4 on a few things, too. After all that, will I ever sell this car now that I own it free and clear? I don't think it's likely that I will anytime soon. But, I can't say for SURE that I won't, and the big thing missing in the equation is that I haven't actually driven the X-Drive M3 or M4. At all. I've driven the X3MC a couple of times, but that's not the same thing despite the engine. I probably need to, and not just in a short loop in bad traffic around my local dealership. The advantages of the X-drive version pull at me, but the fear of being bored by the auto is a real concern. |

I have no plans to sell mine. At least until the next big shiny object appears😂
I usually keep car 3-5 years then get bored. I suspect I’ll have my M4 for 4 more years, minimum |

I'll just speculate here a bit, so take what I say with an appropriate dose of sodium chloride.
I think primarily, people sell their M3's because many are leased. People lease for a variety of reasons that I am sure has been debated to death, but at least one reason is folks who like to change cars very frequently. But there are also people who have the same MO and yet buy their cars cash. Bottom line, they revel in having a new ride every 3 years. Then you get the people who really wanted something more premium but are quite conservative and went with an M3 when they really wanted and could easily afford something higher end. And maybe once they get the M3, its like a gateway to the next level for which they run out of patience and move on. Then of course you'll get the occasional case of financial trouble. Perhaps they bit off more than they can chew, or something changed in their life - which basically means they were not actually in a position to afford the car in the first place (at least by my definition of afford). For me personally, I seem to hold onto cars for a while now whereas earlier in life I went through cars quite rapidly. I hope that I'll keep my G80 for at least 5 years, and maybe 10 or 20. The longer duration would be a direct result of the G80 being the last pure gasoline M3. It would be tough to part with that. I could easily see a situation where I keep my "dinosaur" M3 and still get one of the more modern ones in addition. But the reality is I can't really predict any of this! |

I'm planning to hold on to mine for at least another 6 years and then ultimately look to upgrade into a 911.
My theory on why there's so many G8X flooding the used market - there's a few reasons: 1) BMW sold the most M3/M4 they've ever sold, so that naturally lends itself to a larger used market 2) Many buyers in this category are fickle in the sense that they like to change cars very often - that coupled with the amount of these cars that were produced and sold - again lends to a robust used market 3) The car was also released at a weird financial time - MANY people overextended financially over the past few years, coupled with many paying ADM to get the car quicker - so many are now trying to get out of those financial decisions that got them severely underwater
