There's already an M emblem on the steering wheel and dead pedal (and I'm sure there'll be at least one on the new curved display somewhere at all times), an illuminated M3/M4 emblem on each front head rest, and an embossed M on the console shifter.
How many more do we need?

If you consider interior photographs that only capture one portion of the cabin at a time, given the massive overlap with the base cars, aside from the carbon fiber trim (
if optioned), it's the model designation on the gear shifter that make it immediately obvious that it is an M car. Sure there are subtle things like the colored stitching inside the steering wheel but those can be non-obvious.
The M logo on the steering wheel is there on M Sport versions of the base car. Even the carbon fiber trim is showing up on some non-proper-M cars like the i4.
And for some photos, it's the only thing that could tell you if it was taken inside an M3 or an M4.
So yeah, the model designation on the gear console is not a sure-shot "no-one cares" decorative element. It's a close second to the designation on the trunk lid imo.
