Lightbulb Future BMW model information

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
This post contains information about future production plans I've compiled from various leaks within the BMW organization. It is continuously updated: new research is added, and everything that becomes official is deleted.

Moderator: Items scheduled to happen in 2024 are highlighted in blue.

FAQ:

Can you guarantee that all of these models will come to market?
- No.

Can you tell me where you found this info?

NA5 iX3
  • In production 7/25-10/33 in Debrecen. Non-European markets will see the car in the Spring 2026. Production at SLP starts in the second half of 2026.
  • Model range: 40, 40 xDrive, 50 xDrive, M60 xDrive
  • Will be the first model to use several new features. The most interesting ones are the Panoramic Stage interface recently previewed in the NK concept (it will be standard) and the Augmented Reality glasses BMW plans to bring to market in 2027. The options we're already familiar with will include Iconic Glow exterior, the first use of multifunction seats with massage function on a 3-series level model, and various M features (M packages, M trims, M seats, M steering wheel). At least at this time, there is no autonomous driving beyond Level 2.
  • May include ZA5 iX3M.

  • In production 12/28-11/35

I20 iX
  • In production until 06/28.
  • 03/25: LCI with potential drivetrain and battery refresh. M Sport Package will become available on the lesser models. Adds Iconic Glow kidneys (of course), many new wheel choices.

MINI F65/F66/F67
  • 07/24: Worldwide F65 C and S, US F65 S, US F66 C
  • 11/24: Worldwide and US F66 JCW, F67 C, S, and JCW
  • JCW 228hp.
  • All models in production until 12/30

MINI U25 Countryman
  • In production until 6/31. EV models will end production in 06/28 to be replaced by NE5.
  • 07/24: US SE ALL4.
  • Since U25 is basically U11 with a different body, there's a direct equivalency between their trims. D is sDrive18d, C is sDrive20i, S ALL4 is xDrive23i worldwide and xDrive28i in the US, JCW is M35i, E is sDrive20, SE ALL4 is xDrive30.
  • Not going to describe packaging and options since those are also very similar to U11, just with MINI specific flair.

MINI NE5 Countryman
  • Neue Klasse model, probably reskinned NB5 like was done with U25.
  • Production 11/28-10/36.

EOP dates for the current models not listed above:

G31 5er - 02/24
F40 1er - 06/24
G01 X3 - 07/24
F44 2er - 10/24

G08 X3/iX3 - 04/25
G02 X4 - 11/25
G05/F95 X5/X5M - 07/26
G07 X7 - 07/27
G06/F96 X6/X6M - 03/28 (12/27 for US)

General, non-model specific, and engine notes
  • Euro-specific bit of good news: S58 will be EU7 compliant.
  • BMW is planning to offer the largest battery among all BEVs on the market at 120kWh. It will go into the model that we haven't seen yet, and I'm not yet going to speculate on the car itself.
May 2022
  • G20, G21, and G28 will get optional Iconic Glow kidneys in 2024 for MY2025.
  • G42 M240i/M240ix will get optional carbon roof, also in 2024.
  • Production of G20 has been extended to 06/27 (07/27 for SLP), G21 - 10/27, G22 and G23 - 06/28. The corresponding M models will also remain in production. This is highly unusual, breaking the traditional 7 year model cycle. I will be looking for more confirmation of this but I think the most plausible explanation is the replacement of the 3/4 series as we know it with Neue Klasse based EVs, as mentioned in recent interviews of BMW top managers.
June 2022
  • Right on the heels of G81 intro, another bit of happy news for non-US touring fans: G99 M5 Touring is real. If it doesn't die under a beancounter's knife, it'll start production in 11/24.
  • The primary production plant for Neue Classe cars for the North American market will be SLP. It will start with two models. NA0/NA1 i3 sedan and touring will be successors to G20/G21. NA5 iX3 will be built in parallel with G45 X3 (similar to Mercedes making separate ICE and EV models for the same market segment). All these models will start production in 2027.
  • G05/G06/G07 will be succeeded by G65 X5 and iX5, G66 X6 and iX6, G67 X7 and iX7. These will be CLAR based cars, not Neue Klasses, and as such their EV versions will still share the hardware with ICE and hybrid models just like i4 and i7 do today.
  • G20/G21: Some kind of a mild cosmetic refresh in 07/24. At the same time, US engines will be brought in line with the new emissions requirements (next year we'll know if that will affect power output). In EU, all diesel engines will be brought to EU7 compliance starting 03/25.
  • The first true Level 3 autonomous driving system called "Personal Pilot" will be available on select G6x and G70 models in Europe and China starting in late 2023 on G70 and July 2024 on G6x. I'm not seeing this functionality on US cars yet.
July 2022
  • Adjustment to G2x timeline: The demise of G20/G21 has been moved to 02/27, while the diesel engine emissions adaptation is now happening in 11/25 instead of 03/25. For G22/G23 that diesel engine change will happen in 03/26.
  • I was wrong in my reporting on G99 when I said it was good news for non-US fans. It is actually good news for everyone. I can confirm the US version is also planned.
September 2022
This is a special update with a long list of future models, and their production locations and dates. The list includes very long term future plans, and as such they are highly speculative. There's no guarantee the listed models will even exist at all. This comes from another active forum participant whose search skills significantly exceed mine. I'm breaking it up by model series/platform, including only those with new information. Note that all F and G models are the current architectures with gas, hybrid or pure electric power, all N models are electric only Neue Klasse. Skipping China specific stuff because who cares.
  • 1/2/X1:
    • F70 1 series hatch, Germany, 7/24-6/30
    • F74 2 series GC, Germany, 11/24-10/30
    • NB0 i1, Germany, 03/28-02/36
    • NB5 iX1, Germany, 11/27-10/35
    • NB8 i2, Germany, 7/28-6/35
  • 3/4/X3/X4
    • G50/G51 3 series sedan and touring, 7/27-12/34, G84 M3 sedan possible within that timeframe.
    • G45/G97 X3, iX3, X3M, Spartanburg, 8/24-10/33.
    • G46 X4 may have been cancelled - not confirmed.
    • NA0/NA1 i3 sedan and touring, Germany, SLP, 11/26-10/34 (SLP starts with one year delay).
    • NA2/NA3 i4 coupe and cabrio, Germany, 7/28-10/36
    • NA5 iX3, Hungary and SLP, 8/25-10/33 (again, SLP starts with a delay of over a year).
    • NA7 iX4, Hungary, 11/26-6/34
  • X5/X6/X7/XM
    • G65/G95 X5, iX5, X5M, Spartanburg, 12/26-7/33
    • G66/G96 X6, iX6, X6M, Spartanburg, 4/28-3/35
    • G67 X7, iX7, Spartanburg, 8/27-11/34
    • G79 iXM, Spartanburg, 12/28-11/35
  • 7/8
    • G75/G76/G77/G93, 8 series coupe, cabrio, GC, M8GC, Germany, 7/26-6/33
    • ND0 i7, Germany, 7/29-6/37
Regular updates
  • G2x and G42 will get the glass knobs option in 2024.
October 2022
  • The likely changeover from M2 to M2 Competition is 08/24.
  • G60 models that will be introduced after the initial release: 3/24: worldwide and US i5 xDrive40; 7/24: US M560e.
November 2022
  • The M2 change in 08/24 is possibly just an engine mod to new emissions standards and not the transition to M2 Comp.
  • Added some details about G45 X3 configuration: two US gas models to start (base - no designation known yet, and M50i), no new engines, making a step up in luxury (standard comfort access, Iconic Glow exterior like on the next 5 series, fancier interior materials, driver aids matching the current X5 - also means no L3 autonomy, the best audio is still HK, ID8 dash), M50i also has standard M Sport suspension (adaptive optional), different wheels, and the usual M interior and exterior parts.
  • There will be another special M3 model in 2024-2025, either another run of M3 CS (based on LCI2) or something similar. (May 2023 edit: this is actually M4 CS)
  • The G90/G99 M5 powertrain will be tuned to 700hp.
December 2022
  • Very early hints suggest that BMW will use a very Tesla-like approach to the Neue Klasse model range, with differentiation by both range and drive motors. For example, the NA5 (iX3) could consist of a short range RWD model, SR AWD, LR AWD, and M Performance AWD.
  • Added production start dates for iX2 eDrive20 and iX1 eDrive25L.
January 2023
  • I20 gets an LCI in 03/25, with potential drivetrain and battery refresh.
February 2023
  • NC0 is the chassis code of the next i5 (starting production in 2030)
  • F74 packaging notes: DCT standard, paddle shifted auto optional (standard on M235i), available (standard on M235i) Adaptive M suspension, 17"-19" wheels (17" on lower end EU versions, all US 18" standard), all US models get HK audio as standard, optional on all models: active seats, interior trim with lighting effects, illuminated kidneys, driver assist features same as other recent lower end BMWs. M235i specific: brakes, some lightweight parts, spoiler, interior and exterior trims.
March 2023
  • G8x LCI xDrive will get bumped to 525hp.
  • Intro lineup for F70: 118d, 120d, 118i, M135i xDrive.
  • Production of G29/J29 has been extended by 5 months to 03/26.
May 2023
  • Gas powered F70s will be called "118" and "M135" - the "i" is now dropped. It remains to be seen if the same is going to happen with all future models. Watch this space.
  • Added U11 X1 sDrive20d for 07/24.
  • The next special model in the G8x range will be M4 CS. Virtually the same car as the current M3 CS but with two fewer doors and some headlight changes (no laserlights). In production 07/24-06/25.
  • Added more G60/G61 models with SOP 07/24.
June 2023
  • Potential G45 models: X3 20, X3 20 xDrive, X3 20d xDrive, X3 30 xDrive, X3 30e xDrive, X3 40d xDrive, X3 M50 xDrive. Note the drop of "i" from the gas models' names and the overall rearrangement of designations.
  • L3 autonomy has been dropped from G60. Not clear if this is temporary.
  • Potential additional F70 models: 116, 120, 128 xDrive.
  • Potential F74 models: 218d, 220d, 216, 218, 223 xDrive, 228, 228 xDrive, M235 xDrive.
  • Potential F78 models: 220L, 225L, M235L xDrive.
  • MY2025 G20 starting production in 07/24 is getting TÜ2 engines in the US and SK like G22/G23 LCI.
  • MY2025 G87 M2 will be tuned to 475hp. Skyscraper Gray, Mineral Red, Portimao Blue, and Sao Paulo Yellow could be the new colors.
  • I20 LCI will be in production 03/25-06/28. M Sport Package will become available on the lesser models. Adds Iconic Glow kidneys (of course), many new wheel choices.
  • BMW has found some spare horses grazing in the fields, so the G90 M5 is now rated at ~718hp. (BMW Blog has already reported this number, I confirm.)
  • 116 and 123 xDrive will be added to the F70 lineup in 11/24 (same powertrains as the current X1 sDrive16i and X1 xDrive23i).
  • US will get F74 228 xDrive and M235 xDrive at intro, then 228 in Spring 2025.
July 2023
  • Potential G50 lineup: worldwide 318, 320, 330, 330e, M350 xDrive; US 330, 330 xDrive, M350 xDrive. Current production plans 11/26-10/34. Note that this overlaps with the production dates of G20, which means one of them is incorrect and will be adjusted (over 3 years until then, plenty of time for changes). Diesel models should show up later - or maybe not at all?
August 2023
  • The next in line to lose the "i": G70. With LCI, the gas models become 735 and 740 while i7 naming will be rearranged into "50 xDrive" and "60 xDrive".
  • The next generation of X5/X6/X7 (G65/G66/G67) will likely lose the V8 engine. Instead, M60e xDrive (same B58-based powertrain as G60/G70 60e's) will be the top model. Model designations will follow the same new structure as the G45.
September 2023
  • First shot at clarifying G50 lineup and release schedule: see in G50 section above.
  • Production of all BMW branded FAAR platform cars (U06/U10/U11/F70/F74) will continue until October 2033. This is probably another example of the effects of EV transition: all R&D is elsewhere, and people who buy an ICE car in the 2030s won't care that it's a ten year old design.
  • Next gen Countryman will have platform code NE5 (yes, Neue Klasse), production expected 11/28-10/36.
  • The current plans for NCAR M cars, besides the already known ZA0 M3 sedan, include ZA1 M3 Touring, ZA5 iX3M, and ZA7 iX4M.
October 2023
  • End of production changes for US X6: from 03/28 to 12/27
  • A small adjustment to G70 LCI: 07/26, not 03/26
  • G90 will be in production until 02/31; not clear if that also means a longer production period for all G60s.
  • G73 i7 xDrive60 Protection will be available from 07/24. I can't wait to learn its curb weight.
  • Planned NA0 (i3) model lineup: 40, 40 xDrive, 50, 50 xDrive, M60 xDrive
  • Planned NA5 (iX3) model lineup: 40, 40 xDrive, 50 xDrive, M60 xDrive
  • Planned NA7 (iX4) model lineup: 40 xDrive, 50 xDrive, M60 xDrive
  • Planned G65 BEV (iX5) model lineup: 50 xDrive, M70 xDrive
  • NA5 production is confirmed for 07/25-10/33, with introduction to non-European markets delayed to Spring 2026. It will be the first model to use several new features. The most interesting ones are the Panoramic Vision interface recently previewed in the NK concept (it will be standard) and the Augmented Reality glasses BMW plans to bring to market in 2027. The options we're already familiar with will include Iconic Glow exterior, the first use of multifunction seats with massage function on a 3-series level model, and various M features (M packages, M trims, M seats, M steering wheel). At least at this time, there is no autonomous driving beyond Level 2.
November 2023
  • M3 CS Touring will be in production for exactly 1 year starting 03/25.
  • The date conflict between EOP of G20 and SOP of G50 (see July 2023 update) seems to have been resolved: G20 EOP has been adjusted to 10/26.
  • M2 CS details: in production 08/25-07/26, will get the wheels off the big brother CS/CSLs, carbon roof, bucket seats, alcantara steering wheel as standard. Automatic transmission only.
December 2023
  • The next generation of the telematics system is called EES25. It will be in use in all Neue Klasse cars, G65 and siblings, G70 LCI.
January 2024
  • Panoramic Vision will not be just for future cars. It will be offered on the models already in production. The first I see is G60/G61/G68/G90/G99, where this interface will become standard in 2027 (possibly coinciding with the LCI).
February 2024
  • Detailed specifications for F70 and G90 - see above in the model section.
March 2024
  • The main section above now contains the complete model lineup for G45 and the detailed specifications. Note the absence of non-US 30x or any diesel above 20d.

Will it get the "pure version" of the S58 or a further upgraded B58?

You think too well of me if you expect me to know this kind of detail about a car that's still almost 4 years away.

It seems very reasonable given the G42 doesn't arrive until mid 2021. For the M to come a year and half after the Series model isn't bad at all.

It will be interesting to see how the possibility of a new M240i plays out with your previous comments (in July 2018) that the G42 may only get the B48. Of course that could have changed now, but it seems to me that a high output B48, let's say ~350hp, would make sense for a neo-M240i. It would be lighter than the I6. And maybe by 2022, B58 models will have adopted the *45i and M*45i moniker, opening up M*40i for use with the B48.

Somewhat surprising update about X3 and X4: their lives have been extended by a year.

Actually, I'm not sure about the exact timing of this anymore. Regular X3s and X4s - definitely mid-2019. But M variants could continue using the existing system until early 2020.

My problem is I have conflicting information and don't know which source to trust.

Very interested in this! Anything you can share, now in the future, about the car or even when or where it will be announced, would be much appreciated.
