Brake Malfunction - is this just new pads?
Just wondering if anybody has seen this before.
Out of the blue the SERVICE (car on lift) light comes on, the Brake indicator (!) won't shut off, and if I view the remaining life on the brakes through the service interval menu it just says front and back "---" Last time I checked the car still said I had 20,000 kms service life on the brakes. |

If the service counter is at 0 depending on dealers they may want you to replace both pads, rotors and the brake sensors. I had this on my rear and dealer insist to replace all three items without diagnostics. Of course this is not a warranty item.
It is possible that the sensor is broken so you need to replace the sensor only.

I got mine done at Parkview. They have a brake special and it came out to about $600 for parts and labours. This is for the brake sensor, rotors and pads. They insists the countdown is zero so they are going to replace the pads, rotors and brake sensors, without checking what's remaining first.

I would check if it's just a faulty sensor or if the pads really need to be replaced before throwing away several hundred dollars. I wouldn't replace the rotors either way, unless you are experiencing shaking during braking from warped rotors.
Now, the tricky thing is that (from what I heard) the sensors are one-time use only. Once they have been activated, you can't turn them off and you must replace them if you want the warning light to go away... I'm wondering if I can just do a reset on the dashboard and forget about the whole sensor thing.. I don't need it if I check the brakes myself periodically. |
