Anybody with MP3 issues ?

Just got my 328i a couple of weeks ago. When I put a CD with MP3 that I've burned, the CD player seems to have some issues. It can read it but sometimes it plays the song for a minute or so and skip to the next track. It did it on 2 different CD's that I never had trouble with before.

Anybody had the same experience ? And also how do you tell the system to display the song name ? It just displays "CD xxx" that's it.

thanks for your inputs

not sure about your first issue but it might be that you're using crappy media. try a different brand of CDs and see if that works.

as far as displaying the name of the song, the status bar on the bottom of the screen should actually say MP3 XXX when playing an MP3 CD. you won't get any song info there. you actually have to go to Entertainment and switch to CD view. only then can you see the details about the current song. but remember that iDrive only recognizes v.1 ID3 tags. you can find a million threads using the Search feature on this forum about how to burn CDs with correct ID3 tags and some more info about the topic.

It has to do with the way the music was originally ripped. If the freq was higher the 44k BMW cannot play it and it skips.

Took so long to diagnose it, I originally found it because I was thinking it was the album art.

Holy sh!t, if this last post is correct, this could be the solution to this problem I have (identical to the OP) that I have always had. I gave up on trying to fix this. I can't wait to get home and give it a shot. All of my music was ripped from the cd's at 128, so this explains it well. I will try it when I get home... Man I will be happy if this works. The only weird part will be (if this works) I'll have a copy of all the mp3's at a low quality for the bmw and high quality for my sound system at home. Do other people have mp3's at higher quality's and it is working??? Or does everyone who has the mp3 functionality working have lower quality mp3's?

I'd like to clarify that by 44k Mikie meant that the mp3 was digitized at 44,100 Hz (44kHz) which means that the sounds was sampled 44,100 times per second on each channel. This is pretty much standard, the other option is 48kHz.
When Josh49 said that he ripped his CD @ 128 it means that the Bitrate is 128 kilobit per second and this refers to the amount of compression. 128 kbit/s is basic quality, usually you'd want 196 or higher. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3
BMW has no problem playing higher bitrates at either constant or variable bit-rate.

I just wanted to clarify that the two posters were talking about 2 different characteristics of the digitized and compressed signal.

Actually I checked and they are all at 44k. The weird thing is that it starts playing the song and then skip to the next one. The CD works just fine on my computer for example. I've tried to burn another CD with 2x speed as so people mentioned. I'll see tonight.

Sounds good. What I was thinking did seem a bit off, but off the top of my head I was thinking bitrate and not sampling. When I get home I'll check to see what the defaults are (for sampling). This makes even more sense now.. Sorry, didn't mean to confuse anyone..

Thanks for clarifying this..

I'm glad we are talking about this I gave up on the situation. After many attempts of software, cd type's, brands, etc.. I gave up. All produced the same result. So by pointing the finger at the ripping now rather than focusing on burn speeds, media, etc, I think I might be a very happy person tonight???

Fingers crossed...

Sorry, yes I was making the issue extra simple. It was a fire from the hip. I also did not know the full bitrate off of the top of my head.

I just bought an Ipod and use the Aux port. Much of my music (about 6000 songs) is ripped at the wrong rate.

It is not as nice as the MP3 song listing, but I am not going to rip my music all over again. To many GBs to do that. Anything I rip now is at the correct rate and it seems to work, but the overall experience with the MP3s and BMW has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Smile

I had the same probelm with mp3 cd's where sometimes they would skip intermittently. Recently took my car to the dealer and asked if they could update the cip version as I was having many strange problems with I-drive etc. Well since the update the skipping problems have gone away. I didn't mange to find out what version I was updated to but I think it was version cip23. I hope this helps.
