Valvetronic Designs G8X HFD Development Complete: The Ultimate S58 Sound
Valvetronic Designs G8X HFD Development Complete: The Ultimate S58 Sound
Greetings, Fellow Enthusiasts, After multiple stages of development, testing, and refinement, we wanted to bring everything together and share a complete overview of the Valvetronic Designs G8x HFD Midpipe across all tested configurations. This project has evolved significantly from its starting point. This project began in 2021 with the original “Soom Sound” from the famous green g80. We ran into problems with that setup only fitting manual cars. It was then back to the drawing board to create something that fit all G8x M3s and M4s. We have come close before with the V2 and V3, but this HFD midpipe creates the tone we have been chasing. Each configuration delivers something unique. Each configuration serves a different type of owner. But they all share the same foundation: The HFD midpipe, and our passion for chasing the best sound for the S58 engine. https://valvetronic.com/collections/...exhaust-system THE FOUNDATION Before diving into each setup, it is important to understand what this project was really about. This project was about sound. More specifically, it was about unlocking a high-frequency, exotic character from the S58 that has not previously been achieved on this platform. This journey traces all the way back to our first equal-length development in 2021. While that system delivered an incredible tone, it was limited to manual cars due to fitment constraints. With the HFD configuration, we set out to take everything we learned from that system and build something better: • Compatible with all G8x vehicles • Refined through multiple development cycles • Engineered to produce a distinct, high-pitched tone reminiscent of VR38 / GTR-style sound characteristics The result is a system that finally brings that sound profile to the S58 platform THE THREE CONFIGURATIONS STOCK DOWNPIPES + HFD MIDPIPE + VALVETRONIC AXLEBACK This is the most approachable configuration—and for many, the best overall option. With stock downpipes, the system delivers a clean, refined, and well-balanced sound profile that maintains full factory compatibility. • No downpipe modifications required • Ideal for maintaining factory warranty considerations • Smooth, controlled tone with strong high-frequency character This setup proves that you do not need to heavily modify the platform to achieve a dramatic improvement in sound. It retains the OEM components while elevating the experience to an entirely different level. For owners who want the best sound without introducing additional variables, this is the answer. 400-CELL CATTED DOWNPIPES + HFD MIDPIPE + VALVETRONIC AXLEBACK This configuration represents the most complete and refined setup we tested. Pairing the HFD midpipe with high-quality 400-cell catalytic converters creates what we believe is the cleanest sound profile possible on the S58. • No check engine light • EPA-compliant configuration • No drone under normal driving conditions • Extremely smooth, high-pitched, exotic tone • Balanced performance and refinement This setup takes everything the free-flow configuration offers and filters it into something more controlled and musical. The result is a sound that is sharp, exotic, and incredibly satisfying, without introducing harshness or unwanted frequencies. For those chasing the absolute best combination of tone, usability, and performance, this is the standout configuration. IRL 3-INCH FREE FLOW DOWNPIPES + HFD MIDPIPE + VALVETRONIC AXLEBACK This is the most aggressive and unfiltered version of the system. With full 3-inch free-flow downpipes, the HFD midpipe is allowed to operate with minimal restriction, bringing out the most extreme version of its high-frequency characteristics. • Maximum volume and aggression • Sharp, raw, high-pitched tone under load • Strongest expression of the HFD sound signature • Ideal for high-performance and track-focused setups This configuration delivers a sound that is wild, intense, and unmistakably unique. It pushes the S58 into a territory that no setups have been able to reach. However, it is important to note one trade-off: There is a noticeable rasp around the 2500 RPM range that we were not able to fully eliminate without compromising the top-end sound that makes this setup so special. For those who prioritize maximum character and presence, this is an acceptable trade. For others, the 400-cell configuration may be the better fit. WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT Across all three configurations, one thing remains consistent: These are, in our opinion, the best sounding setups currently achievable for the S58 platform. Not because they are the loudest. Not because they are the most complex. But because of the work behind them. This project represents years of iteration, starting from our early equal-length concepts and evolving into something far more refined and accessible. Every version of this system shares the same DNA: • High-frequency focused sound development • Careful control of unwanted resonance • Real-world testing across multiple configurations • A commitment to pushing the platform forward The difference between these setups is not quality. It is volume, character, and preference. FINAL THOUGHTS There is no single “correct” configuration. Some will prefer the OEM-friendly refinement of stock downpipes. Some will want the perfectly balanced nature of the 400-cell setup. Others will chase the raw, aggressive experience of full free-flow systems. All of them deliver. All of them bring out a side of the S58 that has not been fully realized until now. This project has always been driven by passion—for sound, for engineering, and for pushing boundaries for the S58 platform. We are very proud of what our engineering team has accomplished. STAY TUNED The waitlist is now live HERE https://valvetronic.com/collections/...exhaust-system . Join to be the first to know when these are on the shelves and ready to ship. We do plan to have this available for G87 M2 and X3M as well. We are excited to share this HFD sound with the world! Last edited by Valvetronic Designs; 04-03-2026 at 04:52 PM.. |

No video or description of the midpipe only with stock downpipes and stock axle back with our without valve controller? Also noticed this option seems not available to join the waitlist. This will be your most popular config, so hopefully is or becomes an option.

With the stock axleback it was sound almost identical to the sound with our axleback. It is waitlist only as we are getting a head count on how many we need to produce. When you join the waitlist, you will get a notification when it is in stock ready to ship

Good choice, 2K was outside of what people are willing to spend on a midpipe

I think anytime a company price is a product way too high in offers a significant discount such as 25% that right there is a sign that you’ve been taking advantage off In my opinion. It’s just a company I wouldn’t want to do business with. Don’t get me wrong there are companies that use top tier material and actually manufacturing in house such as ink custom where that price is justified.

Ahh! Yes it’s nearly stock. The test vehicle is my personal car and I live in a tight apartment complex. Even free flow I’ll start with valves closed and get no complaints! It’s slightly louder than stock free flow with valves closed. Both catted setups sound identical to stock with valves closed
