Car culture around the g80

So I have a G80 on order in March and obviously have been doing a lot of googling and YouTubing. My YouTube shorts algorithm is full of less mature buyers who are pretty obnoxious and probably a bit over leveraged.

I'm in my late 30s and a working professional who really enjoys the drive of a car and the connection between man and machine (cheesy I know). I always thought m3 buyer generally matched my description. I guess I never really been on social media, but has the g80 community really shifted to a younger slightly annoying crowd?

I am not trying to be a gatekeeper, but more so curious if buying patterns have changed.

G80 is a Tik Tok car. I find it all cringe but it doesn't really affect the way I feel about the car. The fancy cars I used to blow all my money on when I was that age were 15 year old GTIs and stuff. I guess despite all the complaining, this generation isn't that hard done by.

I thought like you… we are of similar age. I don’t know what to tell you. I don’t know how these “kids” get these cars. Best not to waste time trying to figure that out as this is one of those “2+2=5” things… on it’s face it doesn’t make sense. Like how is a 21 year old buying a $85k car? In my neck of the woods not only do they have the cars, they’ve got money for nice upgrade parts too. But really, any “kid” in the trades now is making bank. Also the kids who are in the good IT jobs. Also the kids selling the pills. But I will say - they may have the G80 and outside it looks right, but you don’t know what’s going on “under the hood”.

47 yo professional with a wife and 2 boys. Bought my g80 because I could get it in a manual and it is glorious to drive. I plan on keeping it for 10+ years.

I often go for wandering drives to and from work on fun roads rather than the highway. On a recent weekend trip with buddies extended my trip for a day to drive back of the dragon in va.

It’s so much fun. That’s it.

Pretty sure the ratio of drivers like us vs the YouTubers and Instagram influencers is high.

Don't let social media mislead you; it often doesn't equal reality.

Young, wealthy car enthusiasts have always had expensive cars, you were just not exposed to them in the past without social media. But they were always out there....flexing and wrecking cars and such.

Plus, there are a lot more rich people in the world today (and even more poor people), and rich people often buy nice cars...so there's just more nice cars on the road today.

Last, it's a lot easier for young people to generate generous funds today...as some Influencers make a lot of money. So, they can buy whatever they want. And with the social media algorithm, you will be bombarded with their purchases and activities if you share the same purchase. But it's all a distortion of reality. Most M owners aren't posting their cars incessantly on social media, and most G8X owners are indeed 35+.

And lest not forget that there are plenty of mature "overleveraged" G8X owners as well.

24 years old paid cash loaded spec then did every upgrade possible within a month of having it minus a single turbo or upgraded turbos

All my friends with these are in their 20s or early 30s. It’s a nice car for sure but in the end of the day it’s a bmw not a Ferrari. Anyone that wants one can get one

Don’t pay attention. I remember when I bought my Shelby GT350 and I was like now I am just like a typical Mustang driver. But TBH, I just learned to ignore or else it would’ve kept me away from an amazing experience.

it has shifted into a younger crowd as it effectively became the IT car for Instagram and TikTok... part of that has to do with the way BMW marketed the car at the very beginning literally on all social media and part of it has to do how they made it an all-wheel-drive easy to drive car for anyone... these used to be very enthusiast spec, focused cars, and I don't think they are that anymore and that opened it up to a larger crowd...

This car is probably more likely than other cars to get clicks on social media. Every teen in the past like 5 years aspires to be an influencer.

As for affordability, more kids are living at home on top of not having kids/getting married, so they can blow pretty much all their money on a car payment.

This happens with every car. The hype will die down and carry over to the next hype thing.

If it makes you feel better, I rarely actually see kids in g80s in real life.

I buy cars based on whether I like them or not. I couldn't give two shits about social media, tik tok, or whatever. Before I ordered my G80, I had a Taycan Cross Turismo that was totaled. I cross shopped cars like the Acura Integra Type S, G80 M3 CX, and also considered the Kia EV6 GT Performance.

My point is, who cares what youtuber or tiktoker has a G80. This car is about a year out from finishing this generation. Those social media people will be moving onto the next shiny new object anyway. Buy what you like not because of who else has it.

I’ll tell you how, They Lease/Finance them with the longest terms possible and get Parents to Co-Sign and live with them. Not to mention the amount of G8x’s I see that are Totaled are from Young guys underestimating the true Power of M cars. Everyone on Social Media makes it look like “500 HP is Slow to be fast you need a Lamborghini Huracan with a UGR Twin Turbo Kit and 2000 HP with Drag Tires.” The Car Community is so messed up I even see 15 Year Olds go to Car Meets and be Disrespectful to Owners, Say “Why didn’t you buy X variant of a car did you buy the cheaper trim cause you can’t afford it?” Or “Oh when I turn 16 I’m gonna get a G80, Single Turbo it and make 1200 HP!” Not to mention, These TikTok Car Spotters will FLAT OUT Ignore anything and everything, But once they see an Aventador SVJ, 992 GT3RS, G80/G82, or Ferrari 812 Superfast they RUN after it like their lives are in Danger. Bottom line, Screw Kids who are Disrespectful, Drive what YOU Love, Ignore the people who say “Oh I would Mod your car like this!”

46, family of 3 with a 3yo. Both good jobs. Just got into a ‘26 6MT G80. Plan on doing 10+ years for sure. I still mostly do the commute in my 23yo VW (obviously with the exception of nice warm sunny days!) so it still feels special every time we get in. I expect in a few years it may turn into my daily. And ya, it’s awesome and still was the right choice. Could I have done it at 22…no way, I was broke and in school. I suspect there are quite a few non-20s non-YouTube G80s like me on the road.

41yo, have my G81 CS arriving in 4 weeks. Put my initial order in when I turned 40...can you say midlife crisis😂😂

My 20's and 30's were filled with GTI's, R's and (audi) RS's.

My 40's will hopefully be filled, in addition to the G81, with a f87CS and some previous decade GT P-cars, but time will tell.

Never over leveraged to buy a car, but I work damn hard to afford them, so definitely dont take any of it for granted and enjoy them a lot.

If I think back to my 20's and even early 30's I'm glad I didn't have something like the G8X back then as I was definitely not a mature enough driver even though I did spend a lot of time on the track.

That said, cant blame the kids aspiring to own these cars as social media tells you that is what you need to be happy. Same goes for most luxury items flaunted on the socials.

Kids also make some serious cash these days through more unconventional entrepreneurial approaches, so good for them.

End of the day, spend your money how and on what you enjoy and what makes you happy.

Life is short, enjoy the ride.

Another factor to consider which says a lot is the fact that (if this forum is any indication) there are many more times more G80s sold than G82s. One of the main reasons for that is that most M buyers are posers. They want a performance car but are at an age or in a situation where they need a family car. After all what kind of true performance car enthusiast would buy a 4 door performance car?

this is not the dumbest comment I've read on this forum but it's certainly towards the top... so i'll respond with a dumber one -

Why did you buy the ultimate daily driver practical performance car that isn't a good weekend car with only 2 doors lol?

That's why I bought a G82. The G80 certainly has a much higher percentage of immature "owners".

I agree with most of the statements. Where I live, all of the rich kids with broccoli hair drive G80's and act obnoxious when they see my G82.

Bro, we aren't friends, and your stupid aftermarket wheels are ugly, Don't talk to me. And you're loud ass car is stock except for a muffler delete. So obnoxious.

At least none of these rich kids parents let them tune the car because I just leave them in the dust every time.

I avoid social media (unless this forum counts?), so I didn't consider how the G8X was viewed on those platforms when I bought mine.

Gotta march to your own tune sometimes.

Trevor this ^^^ may be true. Interest rates for houses are way too high at the moment. You don't necessarily need to purchase a house, but if you are living at home, especially my home, than you had better be saving for a house instead of driving around in a 90k car.

Stop watching idiots on YouTube who are leasing their vehicles or renting them making videos and then trashing the vehicle or selling it afterwards.

That’s not the real world!
