Axle Back Adding Headliner Rattle

Hello,

Has anyone upgraded their exhaust system and experienced an inside rattle that comes from the headliner?

I have ARM downpipes, crossover pipes and mid pipe with IRL axle back with SST valve controller.

With everything listed minus the IRL axle back (stock axle back) it did not make the rattle sound. Now it does.

All the headliner clips are retained. BMW looked the headliner and had no repair recommendations. When you hear the rattle though and gently push up on the back passenger corner of the headliner, it stops.

2024 G82 M4 Comp

Thanks for any suggestions.

The stock muffler is very forgiving; it masks a lot of the unwanted noise. Once you change that, everything will get louder.

Given your setup, I'm not surprised you are getting unwanted noise. you should either go back to stock axle back or switch to catted downpipes + resonated midpipe

It's vibration due to excessive resonance from combination of exhaust parts you put on your car. This is why people on here are on a continuous hunt for a magic exhaust setup that sounds decent and doesn't have drone/resonance issues.

Any rattles you are hearing due to your exhaust parts selection isn't a BMW warranty issue. You can either try to isolate the rattle with sound deadening materials, but you will likely develop new noises over time to have to deal with. Or you can swap out exhaust parts until you find some combo that doesn't cause the issue (like adding a "resonated" midpipe)

Have you tried closing the exhaust valves and seeing if it makes a difference?

Closing the valves does make a slight difference, but I'm trying to have it full blast 24/7/365 lol. Thanks for your input. I'm going to see about getting some sound deadening material installed in the headliner.

Swap midpipes and you’re all set.

I have crazy drone with the IRL axelback. I've had the stock, Valvetronic, and IRL exhaust paired with catted d/p and single nr midpipe and IRL was worst with drone

My IRL is pretty drony too, even with a resonated mip pipe. Once I put my catted downpipes on I’m probably going back to the stock axle back.

I'm surprised to hear that it drones with stock downpipes and a resonated midpipe. Are you sure it's installed correctly?

It’s specifically at the 2k rpm area. Super boomy in the cabin if there is load on the engine. Once you get over 2k it’s totally fine. If I end up keeping the axle back I’m going to use XHP to keep the transmission from sitting at or below 2k rpms

I’ve installed quite a few exhausts over my life, so I was fairly confident it was installed correctly. I did take it to an exhaust shop to look at it and make some minor adjustments to get things lined up a little better, still drones.

I have not. I bought the exhaust used, so I have no expectation of customer care haha.

It sounds pretty good 90% of the time, but man when youre going up any type of incline and it’s sitting at 2k rpms it’s pretty ridiculous lol. I can deal with it as it is, but once I put my downpipes in that’s going to push me over the edge I think.
