My long recovery road back to a manual G82

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Back in 2022 I owned a manual skyscraper grey ‘22 M3 that I absolutely loved.

In November that year I had a freak bike accident that nearly killed me. I ended up in the ICU for a week on oxygen with a severely damaged hip/pelvis, 3 broken ribs, a punctured lung, lots of soft tissue damage, and multiple pulmonary embolisms. It was a close call and I’m lucky to be here.

Unfortunately my hip was so injured I was unable to drive a manual (I could barely stand up and shuffle along with two canes) so was forced to trade the car in. I ended up trading it on a loaded Dravit grey 2024 X-Drive Comp on Tartufo with the hope I’d eventually recover enough to get back into a manual car.

Fast forward to just over two years post accident and I’m finally able to drive a manual once again. I picked up this beauty yesterday and the 1.5 hour drive home from the dealer was PURE BLISS.

It’s a manual 2025 Skyscraper Grey Metallic G82 with laser taillights, adaptive LED headlights, red calipers, 825Ms, exterior carbon pack, carbon roof, Fiona red interior, interior carbon trim, ventilated seats and universal garage door opener.

The connection you feel driving a manual RWD G8X just can’t be overstated. I’m still excited like a kid at Christmas and can’t wait to drive it out on some country roads again today.

Cheers!

Although I haven’t had any bad accidents myself, I have a lot of friends who are experienced cyclists and have all had very bad accidents. I gave it up after almost 10 years of competitively racing.

In any event, glad to hear you’re ok and so happy for you to be back in a 6MT G8X!

Thanks, competitive cycling is a tough sport…I raced at the pointy end for over ten years as well. (Raced GFWC worlds 4 times, podiumed at national and provincial TT championships) My accident was from hitting a small 3 inch oil patch on the road in a roundabout at speed during a training ride.

Amazing recovery getting back on your feet and back to a 3rd pedal!

I think alot of people would just keep the XDrive but you can’t beat the engagement of a manual and they wont be around much longer

Yeah, It always amazes me how cyclists play chicken with 18 wheelers. Canada is not a bike safe place. I stick to trails. Yes, trees.

Manual is overrated. Once you experience DCT then PDK, you'll never go back.

Congratulations, glad you survived.

I would say, it's just the opposite. Any auto car, no matter how fast, driven on open roads, is overrated. Give me a manual any time, all the time.

But, I sincerely thank you, and all your brothern, for buying the number of slushboxes BMW needs to sell to offer this amazing car in a manual. 😊

OP, glad you're back at it. I do research in operations with multimodal traffic; it's a dangerous world out there.

Congrats on you’re recovery. You made one mistake in your post. You have led lights now. Not lasers. Just a heads up. 👍🏻
