It is sad, winter is upon us, North East DE programs are winding down. Although few events are still available, it is time for me to close the season with one more autox event left at the end of the month.

Past weekend was the last DE with the Porsche club. The weather was just perfect both days for being on track. Social atmosphere was as good as it gets with many friends around. Unfortunately, there were more than just a few incidents on track as well that, unluckily, impacted my run group more than others I think, I lost some track time. Thankfully, none of the incidents were major ones over the weekend; mostly P-cars spilling oil or coolant, minor off-track excursions pushing dirt on track, one old and track prepped E36 broke a front suspension. A friend's 992 T model ran out of its rear brake pads in a single day, and he had to hang his helmet and go home not running the second day, which sucked of course.

I had about 40% pad left before the event, and now down to about 25%. Still the RSL29s were great all year, never showed any sign of getting weak. A major contributor to such good performance is the brake cooling I had put on - by Speed Engineering - and I am so glad I did. I had full confidence in the brakes all year.

The G80 handled the entire season with flying colors. it never had an issue, ran at top performance and returned home without a single creek or rattle in the car. I really cannot ask for more from a car, multiple personalities and all performed exemplary.

My brake pads and tires lasted the season; 8 track days, 4 autoxes and just shy of 500 track miles. The PS4S tires performed okay, certainly not the fastest but handled the duty. This last event, I had run through the entire thread, and although they still handled the high-speed corners well, it lacked serious grip in slower corner interestingly. Also, I had trouble getting heat into them, as hard as I ran them, the tire temps never went above 170 degF.

Overall had great time with this car on and off the track, it is probably one of the best I have ever owned.

Awesome and agree! After owning two 911's and multiple other performance cars, this car's breadth of ability is really, really amazing. Not many other cars can touch it's entire performance envelope!

Firstly, thank you!

I have similar experiences to your's. I owned two P-cars (981.1 Cayman S and 997.2 GT3) and driven countless of them, including GT3 Cup at Barber. I will and do take this M3 over all of them. The main reason is that this car is jack of all trades, not singular purpose, it is such a hoot to drive slow and fast and utilitarian at the same time. Just amazing

Haha, Sybil is nice, I give you that. "BoB" is actually its name

And thank you as well.

Excellent video and interesting report on brake and tire life.

Amazing how therapeutic that video is! Especially heading into winter storage time! Thanks.

I’m sure I’m in the minority but I had the G80 on the track and tracks that involve a lot of gear changes I just can’t get over how bad this trans is. Sure, all the numbers say it’s great but honestly it’s a far cry from the old DCT or PDK when it comes to Track performance.

Getting a car to be sick on the track is not that hard. Aftermarket suspension availability paired with a great platform will convert any recent ///m to a monster. Trans has to come great from the factory. Both from a performance standpoint and experience.

But it’s just one man’s .02. Not hating, sick car and wish I could get over the trans issue because my e92 track car won’t last forever and pcars are so expensive😩😩😩😩.

Cheers,

Agreed and I’m in the same boat with you. Nothing compares to DCT dynamics while on the track. On the street, it’s still so special on how mechanical it is

I would highly recommend it. I am sure it is just me, but after each run at the track, the car feels so much more alert and willing with a touch of more authoritative bark.

I am sure there is truth to your experience. I don't know if the CS trans software makes a difference, some say it does. I had a 2015 M4 with DCT and did track it. Frankly, it never occurred to me to compare it to the ZF with the G8x. I haven't felt as if anything is missing from the ZF; it shifts up and down promptly, never a hesitation, holds the RPMs, there is a kick in the behind between 2nd to 3rd and to 4th, less so to 5th. So, I don't think the transmission choice between a DCT and ZF really makes a difference. I think manual vs. auto would be a better argument, but then again, the ZF has not diminished *my* engagement factor with the car. Of course, to each his own, but if that is the only thing holding you back, I would not worry .

Cheers as well

Thank you! RTR is a great group as well. Generally, our region has some of the best car clubs IMHO, we are lucky in the northeast

I have not driven those models. My P-car first-hand experiences are with 964 through 997 models, after 997, nothing comes close IMO.

One thing I would note: 911s (and the 987s/718s, etc.) drive differently than Bimmers. This is mainly due to engine placement and weight distribution, and the suspensions are tuned differently. In my experience, people who haven't spent long-enough time with a P-car feel the difference and think it is better. I don't think it is better, it is different. If you are looking at your first P-car, you should go for it, experience it and then you will likely come back to a Bimmer later on

Best of luck.

So just curious, based on your handle, did you regularly track an E92 M3, and if so how did you like it? I did, actually an E90 M3 6MT, my favorite track is still Mid-Ohio. Talk about needing good coordination for braking, shifting, etc. Loved it.

Great to hear from someone regularly tracking their G80. I have an FL5 Type R that I’ve tracked on PS4S as well. Surprisingly versatile tire. I’d like to try out some RE71s next though. Hoping to get a G80 in a few years!

I recognize the his-and-hers 991 cup cars in the picture. Is this PCA Potomac? I ran with them at Pitt Race in June. Excellent organization! Glad your event went well. BTW 170 degrees into a PS4S is a lot of the that tire. It falls off pretty quick above 150 from my experience with it. You sound like your ready for a more heat tolerant tire next year!
