Ceramic coating.. what are the negatives?

Hi guys, purchased a G80 and got PPF on the hood, lights and stone guards. I am thinking about getting ceramic coating done with GYEON MOHS EVO. Any thoughts or negatives around getting this done?

Running for $500 for a 3 year coat. All responses appreciated it! Thank you

I've used this coating on all my cars, and it works wonders—providing deep gloss and excellent hydrophobic properties. I do the installation myself, so the cost is just $65 for the bottle and about an hour of my time. If the car needs polishing and paint correction, it becomes a full-day job. Are you getting both the correction and installation done for $500, or just the installation?

No real negatives. Application might be one depending on the product and your skill level, but if you’re having it done professionally than no issue there. When the coating begins to fail it can look pretty bad, but that’s usually after a couple of years minimum, and at that point you just repeat the process.

Thanks for the quick response, appreciate it.

I do not need a paint correction, just the installation for $500. Says it’s good for 3 years and wants me to get a extra bottle just in case. So would be around $545. That seem fair or way overpriced?

Honestly, the price seems fair. Professional installers in the Bay Area charge anywhere from $600 to $800. However, if you’re up for the task and feel confident in your skills, you might consider doing it yourself. The coating is quite easy to install.

Sounds good, super helpful. How about three years for $545 on just installation, that fair or overpriced? I would not be putting it on myself, a professional mobile retailer would be

Sounds good, super helpful. Thank you! I do not trust myself to do it but just happy to hear that’s a good coating company, you trust it and price is fair. Really appreciate it!

It’s fair, but depends on his level of expertise. Do you know his work or can he provide references and/or examples of his jobs? The car still needs to be polished, which is technically some level of paint correction so make sure that price includes at least a 1step polish and decon before application. Don’t apply coatings without doing that!

The only negative I would say about ceramic coating is that due to its inherent nature of water beading, you will tend to get more water spots if those beads are left to dry.

The problem with ceramic coating is that it's not as effective as advertised. You'll still easily get small scratches when washing the car(especially for dark color), and it doesn't last as long as sellers promise.

It's better to polish and apply PPF to the whole car, especially if you plan to keep the car for a long time.

I would only do a ceramic coating if it can be done 100% perfectly. A bad cermiac coating application makes the paint much worse than without it.

First is the washing. Do you trust the people to be super careful not to leave wash marks on your car? Do they have absolutely clean wash mitts and proper wash and drying techniques? If anything went wrong during this step, you will have a shiny and glossy paint surface but probably with 10+ wash marks every sqft. Are you OK with that?

Personally I have never met a detailer good enough not to add noticeable wash marks on my carj. No matter how nice their workplace is and tools are. They are just not careful enough. I personally can guarantee scratch-free doing my own car, because I spend 5+ hrs just on the exterior.

CC installation is another step they can ruin your paint. The coating is applied with flimsy wipes on dry surfaces, meaning a lot of risks to add scratches. And the buff-off step is even more risky. If it is not buffed off promtly, the CC smears and smudges can solidify on the paint which cannot be removed by any type of wash.

And if you are not satisfied with the CC and you want to redo a part of it? That means again a thorough clean and at least a polish, and reaaply the CC from scratch.

I had CC done on my brand new car as an add-on for PPF, and they screwed it. Many long wash marks and CC haze everywhere because they didn't buff off properly. And it happened to be more severe on places harder to reach and inspect, which means much harder to correct to the original condition.

I have spend 20+ hrs to clean-up the bad CC, and i haven't finished even half of the surfaces. On the surfaces I worked on I am very satisfied with the results but I am afraid there are quite many places I cannot correct with my tools and garage.

A reputable CC installer in my area, which I don't know if they can satisfy my standard, charges about $2000+ for the full car. And CC is not that protective at all. Bird droppins and hard water stain can easily penetrate and ruin them. A full PPF costs about $5000+, which makes your paint visually scratch free, hydrophbic and protects the paint very well.

Only good experiences here with professional installs. In uk to get hold of the professional ceramic coatings you need to be trained and registered.

My first coat C.quartz lasted two years before it became patchy. Then just had detailer redo it. The current car has ultra self healing which is claimed to last 3 years. At two years no sign of wear.

Note both these coatings need IR baking in a clean environment. Also i apply titan ultra v4 every few months to maintain it.

No issues with bird crap which has been left for a month (holidays so left car out).
