Figuring out the M Drive Settings

I have now owned my M4 for about a month. Through trial and error I have found the sweet spot for me for fun daily driving.

I like the engine in Sport Plus.

Suspension in sport. Car came with HAS sport suspension. Sport plus is too jostling on city streets/roads.

Steering & Brakes in sport.

Biggest adjustment was setting the transmission to D2. I had it in D3 on M2 and that was almost too harsh.. If you stomped on the go pedal the REV Hang was obnoxious to a point.

Always something to learn about these amazing cars.

I’m 55, ache all over, grumpy, sleepy, tired all the time and have a manual with buckets as a daily… all settings on sport plus. Two traffic stops (no ticket) in 4 months since delivery. Screw it all, what the hell is the car for otherwise…

I'm in a manual M4 with the M Performance Suspension. After 1,000 miles this is what I've settled on. I use M1 around town, M2 on the freeway:

M1: Engine - Sport Plus
Shift Assist - ON
Suspension - Comfort
Steering - Sport
Brakes - Sport
Active Sound - ON

M2: Engine - Efficient
Shift Assist - ON
Suspension - Comfort
Steering - Comfort
Brakes - Comfort
Active Sound - ON

I'll bump up to Sport suspension on a nice windy road, but otherwise Comfort seems to be fantastic for the street.

It took me about a month to learn that the car is very sensitive when it comes to throttle response lol

To me the car feels worse in anything other than comfort for suspension settings.

I like sport+ on the engine, but I don’t like the obnoxious amount of burbles with it so i usually leave that in sport.

Sport is a must on steering, still leaves a lot to be desired.

Just an FYI if you use the exhaust button near the shifter burbles are turned off or at least 90% less in sport + or any engine mode

Yep I know. They are just more dramatic in sport+ vs sport, not my cup of tea.

So are your launches better in D2 than D3 (non launch control ones)?

I’ve had my G80 now for just over a week and have settled on the following for my main driving (set to my M2 mode)
Engine: Sport + (I like the throttle response and added exhaust tone, but the interior piping in of it is a bit much)
Transmission: Comfort (Easy enough to switch on the fly with the buttons on the shifter if I want more transmission hang, but for normal day to day driving, I appreciate the efficiency by shifting up quicker and find the engine does a fine job of downshifting into braking and turns in Comfort for normal driving)
Suspension: Sport (a good balance of stiffness and comfort)
Brake: Comfort (I like the ability to ease in and out of braking without jerking too much).

My M1 is set to Engine: Sport and Suspension: Comfort as a way of easing off a bit those settings that aren’t as easy to change on the fly.

Greetings,

I'm still trying to decide whether comfort or sport on the suspension setting is the best for city driving. The M4 Competition seems like riding a bucking bronco on city roads. Freeways are better, but not much better. I usually put mine into M1 with mild settings. Have to try the engine settings. Still getting used to all the settings. In basic settings, I typically adjust the shifting (raise it one notch).

Currently installing my radar detector...found an easy and inexpensive way to install...a thread is forthcoming with pics.

Had mine a little over a month now, and I am also not a spring chicken (will be 50 soon) and have the wick turned up to sport + on everything. It's not my daily...its for fun. I mostly leave it in MDM and 4WD Sport also. Maybe I am just imagining it...but I feels like the exhaust is louder (more burbles) with MDM on as opposed to just leaving it in Sport+ by itself?

Haven’t specifically done enough launches to compare the diff between D2 vs D3. I would expect D3 would still launch harder.

I like D2 better for the street just because you don’t get the extended “rev hang” for 10 seconds after you let off the pedal. I didn’t like looking like a 16 year old that didn’t know when to shift. Just my personal preference.

On a track…D3 all day long.

Ive had 15 M's and almost all have had some sort of "D" LOLOL

Ive always used the D3 when available unless Im in S mode; but here in Cali D is favorable with traffic.

I always keep the suspension in Sport. It's less bouncy than Comfort mode without any noticeable increase in harshness. I kind of struggle to understand the purpose of Comfort mode to be honest.

Sounds like you need better countermeasures my friend. But what's the secret to no ticket when stopped?

Thank you for confirming my suspicion. The sport setting in the suspension is better than comfort.

So the rev hang can be fixed with the CS flash on the transmissions. You can also bump up the gearing with the paddle shifter. I would do this alot when driving in D3 on the street to prevent either rev hang, or when slowing down in D3 and the car drops into second gear at 6000 RPM and scare everyone at the stop light. CS Flash fixes these two issues and also adds a little kick in the ass when short shifting. I bring this up because I notice most of the replies are also from newer G8X owners and your mentioning certain behaviors that I think are improved or annoyance removed with the CS flash.

Additionally the CS flash makes Sport+ my new default damper settings. Before the CS flash, the dampers in sports+ were too tight on rebound making the ride bouncy and the backend unstable on the street. Now Sport+ rebounds wonderfully, 95% reduction in the bouncing. Steering feels a little better, but not worth doing the flash for that alone.

I share because we have these amazing cars and they can be fine tuned even more if you desire.
