Eibach front springs grinding noise

Had the front only springs installed by a reputable shop in the Bay Area and both sides are making a grinding sound when going over uneven roads. Turns out the springs are making contact with metal surface (see photos). The kit did not come with bump stops so OEM was used - not sure if that’s what’s causing it. Any ideas?

Thanks Luc I have a G80 base so bought the RWD springs with that part number. Your part seems to be for AWD according to their website.

F11-20-049-03-FA is M3 RWD front spring kit, are you RWD?

Edit: you already answered while I was typing. Make sure that your spring is properly seated in that black rubber, spring coil should go all the way to raised rubber notch (sorry idk how to explain properly, hope it is clear)

Thanks it’s a 6mt rwd and the shop has installed these before so I’m not sure if it’s an installation issue. Could OEM bump stop cause this since I did read the manual that if replacing front springs the bump stop will have to be replaced (not the rear).

I just installed Eibach front springs today (albeit on an xDrive G80) but they used the OEM bump stops...the springs don't come with replacement bump stops.

Apparently the AWD springs don’t come with bump stops (according to their PDF manual online) but the RWD does. Any issues with noise or contact?

No issues at all. Feel like stock and no strange sounds.

Where did you buy the springs from? Was it reputable? This kit comes with new bumpstops. Regardless of that, the springs don’t look right in terms of vertical coil proximity. Maybe you got some bullshit knockoffs or something. No bumpstops and noise is not a good sign for either your installer or the place you bought the springs from. The fact the installer didn’t stop immediately when they opened the box and read the instructions, which also indicate what should be in the box, speaks volumes for their lack of basic experience. You always check you have all the correct parts before starting an install.

Thanks I bought the springs directly from Eibach. They’re pulling some stock now to see if any are out of spec, but I agree with you that the springs don’t appear to sit right.

Springs actually look fine if you can trust this picture: https://eibach.com/product/E10-20-049-11-20

It is AWD springs that have consistent coil spacing, it appears that RWD springs have two coils very close to each other.

How positive are you OP that the springs are clocked correctly on the shock?

Thanks guys for the input! I’m not positive that the springs were seated correctly since I didn’t do the job myself - going to have another shop take a look tomorrow to see if it’s an installation issue. Eibach got back to me and said they’ll send me some split tubing to put over the 2nd coil which will help with the noise, but I’m not sure that’s a long term solution…

I have Eibach springs installed on my RWD M3 and I changed the bump stops. No noises on mine.

Did you ask them why there wasn’t any new bump stops in the box? It’s supposed to come with the springs.

I did and they claimed it was an oversight on their end so they’re sending it now.

Did you install the AWD springs or the RWD springs?

Update: had a 2nd shop look it over and it’s not an installation issue, the RWD springs Eibach released in March this year causes this problem because it’s actually lower than the AWD springs that’s been on the market by about half an inch so there’s not enough clearance. A warning to those looking to buy the RWD springs.

Eibach said the AWD springs are on back order but they’ll be sending me some split tubing to cover the 2nd coil where it makes contact and if that doesn’t work they’ll send the AWD springs once it becomes available (October). Really bummed about having to re-do the install+alignment.

Wait, so instead of fixing their springs and sending you new ones (and I would add they should also cover your installation costs because it is their issue) they are sending you rubber tubing and springs for AWD?

Those pics sure make it look like the spring is "clocked" incorrectly into the base/support area. Probably just how the pic looks - I guess???

Anyway, I've got the four spring x-drive Eibach kit and it's been flawless. M4comp. I think enough of Eibach, that I put their four spring kit into my X3Mc too.

Good luck!

Dang. Sorry to hear about this issue.

I just order E10-20-049-11-20 this week from Eibach for G80 RWD. Seems like the part number with issue in this thread is 11-20-049-03 FA.

I wonder if "E10" is a backdated part number. Anything I should be concerned with? I'll reach out to Eibach.

E10-20-049-11-20 is KIT number. It comes with two F11-20-049-03-FA springs, which are discussed here, so maybe hold your horses installing it until we have more info here.
