RPM was limited to 4k rpm???? --- Case update!!! Mice won this game!!!

This morning, while driving my M3, I noticed that my engine's RPM was limited to 4000. Initially, I thought this might be due to the cold temperature. However, even after driving for a while and the oil temperature returning to normal, the RPM remained limited to 4000.

I have tried stopping and restarting the engine several times, but the issue persists. There are no error messages on the screen, and the fuel tank is full.

I have already scheduled a service appointment with the dealer for next week, but I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas in the meantime.

Please note that regardless of the temperature shown in my dashboard screenshot (which was taken at the very beginning), the oil temperature normalized later, but the RPM was still limited to 4000.

No tune, everything stock beside of midpipe.

Thank you.

You sure the oil temp went to at least 100C° on the gauge? Also, what’s your oil level at?

If you come out of M mode, is it still the same?

It's 11C/50F where they are. Even at 0C/32F cold start I was never limited to 4k RPM. The car is in limp mode.

Yes, I was going to say this reminded me...our cars don't have the "warm up increasing redline" thing any more, do they?

Ya, I did, but why post a picture of your dash with 4k redline and cold oil? Something’s wrong here. Either the car’s in limp mode, which would provide a notification through the dash, or the car’s not warm.

Car is in limp mode. If you’re primarily stock, then just take it into the dealership for them to diagnose and look at. I’m not sure an OBD2 scanner will spit any codes but it’s worth a shot if you have one laying around.

I had the same limp mode issue when I shifted hard into 3rd gear after bouncing off the rev limiter in 2nd several times, hunting for traction. I got a drivetrain error and the car went into limp mode the rest of the way home. Turned off the car, then on again 10 minutes later, and everything was fine. If the issue persists after, then it’s something the dealer should absolutely look at since you’re as near as makes no difference, stock.

Good luck

They do, but I've never seen it start at such a low RPM. I think it's around 5.5 normally

They do! When it's super cold out by me (30s) I'm at around 5-5.5k RPM and it'll slowly rise.

What I don’t get is that when the car’s in limp mode, it’s very obvious so not sure how the OP could have missed all the warning messages that go along with the 4k redline

Yes they do. Mine starts about 5800 to 6000 and the redline changes as the engine warms up to 7200.

Hmm, didn't notice it this winter. I'll have to look. What does it look like in iD8?

Same thing, just in the iD8 style of yellow/red line.

Yeah, I saw it at lunch. A few yellow bars, but it's reaching down so short....like around 7k. I honestly completely forgot about the "variable redline" and thought it was just a warning that you're getting close to the limiter. Will have to pay attention a little more now.

I don't recall even when it was "Houston cold" (i.e. 30's) that it was down very far at all. I have noticed, however, that my car insists on doing cold starts quite often even when it's still warm from a recent drive. Annoying.

Cold starts are more for heating up the catalytic converters for maximum efficacy. Those cats cool down rather quickly which is why your car/engine can be relatively warm with a redline of 6800 or 7000, but still have a cold start roar and higher RPM idle until the cats reach a favourable operating temperature.

Removal of cold start is one major reason why I tuned, I couldn't stand it.

Case update!!! Mice won this game!

I asked my mechanic to inspect the car and discovered an error code 13070E for the engine module, indicating an engine VANOS solenoid fault and a break circuit.

Guess what? Mice had bitten through my cable while the car was parked! There were also signs of mice activity, like pee and hair, found in my engine bay. I remember that the place where I parked had some mice, but I can't believe this happened.

My mechanic helped reconnect the circuit, and the error is now gone. It seems that the S58 engine enters a limited mode to prevent further issues if a fault is detected by the computer.

Who knew? Mice >>> S58.

Well, the Original Code name for S58 was J58 before they changed it. J for Jerry.

You got LUCKY. Those mice can cause some real damage. I remember Matt from Obsessed Garage had mice take out his rear wiring harness. Was like $16k of damage.
