OEM Carbon Fiber Steering Wheel Trim DIY without removing the steering wheel

There's a few options out there for carbon fiber steering wheel trim:

$100-150 - Aftermarket Carbon Fiber Overlay
Thin layer of carbon fiber stuck onto your original silver trim with thin double-sided tape. Looks good however it does add noticeable thickness and you can feel the edges. Easy to install, airbag doesnt need to come off.

$250-350 - Aftermarket Carbon Fiber Replacements
Direct replacements. Quality is quite good but not OEM level of fit and finish. Refer to instructions below.

$630 - OEM Carbon Fiber Replacements
Direct replacement. Perfect fit and finish. Refer to insturctions below

OEM P/N's
32-30-9-882-894 - upper steering wheel trim carbon fiber
32-30-9-882-893 - lower steering wheel trim carbon fiber (w/ heater)

You can actually replace the steering wheel trim without removing your entire steering wheel which would require removing the T50 torx center bolt.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Disconnect battery in the trunk. Loosen 10mm bolt on the negative terminal and take it completely off the post.
2. Step on brakes a few times to fully discharge system.
3. Use a small/medium flathead screwdriver to pierce the sides of the steering which will pop out the left and right sides of the airbag to release it. There are 2 indentations for these pierce points. Refer to Youtube videos.
4. Move aside the x2 blue paddle shifter connector to gain access to the T20 torx bolt holding in the paddle shifters (see pics below). Remove bolts so you can move the paddle shifters out of the way.
5. Once paddle shifters are out of the way, at the back of the steering wheel you can see the x2 T20 torx bolts holding the corners of the upper steering wheel trim onto the steering wheel (see pics below). Remove those bolts.
6. Put some blue painters tape on the leather right below the bottom steering wheel trim piece (where the small "M" badge is). Use a nylon pry tool to pry up on the trim piece. This will release the entire steering wheel trim from the steering wheel.
7. Unplug the connector on the left steering wheel buttons side and at the bottom spoke for the heated steering wheel button.
8. Transfer over all the buttons to the new trim. Reference how they screwed in and the wire routing on the OEM silver piece.
9. Reverse steps to install back.
