Recently picked up a new family wagon to replace my G21 330i touring which was a fantastic daily, but obviously one with 500+hp is better.

Being an e36 tragic I couldn't go past Daytona Violet once I saw them show it in that colour at Goodwood.

Got some photos from the detailer after they put paint protection film on it.

Going to try and not modify this one but we'll see how that goes.














For some reason this was more of a squeeze than in the 330i but they all fit back there.

Would love to see a G81 in the US but safety crash certification is DAMN! expensive. I'm guessing the take rate for such an estate is not high enough. Mommies and Daddies buy more X3/X5m's i suppose.

There’s a reason why BMW is bringing the upcoming M5 in wagon form to the USA - because they saw the success the RS6 Avant had and they want that market. Anyone that thinks a G81 wouldn’t have sold well here would be mistaken.

Everyone says crash testing is expensive, but Cadillac was able to certify the CTS-V back in the day and claimed that they were making money after selling 8 of them. That is not a typo, 8 total.

That being said, if BMW were to sell a few hundred it is likely they would be net positive to sales since it is an existing chassis already sold in the US. Tooling is done, emissions is approved on the sister chassis so the requirements are known, etc. It is basically crash testing and emissions update.

You're wrong. It has exceeded expectations in Europe. It would sell well here.

The issue, and what you may be trying to say, is that it wouldn't move incremental units. It would sell much better than the convertible variant (which doesn't sell many units). They bring us the convertible though because G83 buyers would likely not but a G8x without the convertible; they would buy a convertible from another brand.

Touring buyers in the US buy the sedan because we don't have an alternative. BMW obviously didn't feel it would sell to enough people who would buy something else. That's exactly why the M5 Touring is the one that they're going to bring here - in that segment they lose sales to the RS6 so they want to claw back part of that market.

Exactly. It would sell well here but at the expense of existing G8x and X3M sales. BMW didn't think there business case for conquest buyers and thus it didn't make sense to cannibalize themselves. Cadiliac got conquest buyers with the CTS-V wagon.

I got told by my regional trainer the reason the M5 touring won’t be here is because of sales lol. People always mention the RS6 because everyone says it does so well.. but it’s the only variant and Audi in Q2 of 2023 has sold about 1,535 that number includes sales of A6, S6, A6 all road and RS6. So that begs the question is it really doing so hot?? I’ve asked a lot of my clients would they buy a wagon not many people atleast in Florida like the styling as most our M consumers are younger 20s early 30s who tune their cars which the extra 200 isn’t helping and also for the fact that the base is 110k that’s M5 territory. Most people would rather get older 911 or m8 for that price point. Because their ideal spec is probably 120-125. It would just make sense to save the extra 20k and drop that in mods than to have a wagon.. or even get an RS6

Problem with RS6 (and M8) is size, tunability, and depreciation. Ironically, the age group you referenced, 20s to 30s (probably stretched to 40s) is exactly who would buy it. It's not out of need, it's because it's cool.

Why exactly do you think it's 20k more? Touring is exactly €1k more than the sedan in Germany...
