Surprised to see this post on here as a front page article in all honesty. It highlights the CSL as a complete misstep. You would think after 20 years BMW would have done a better job. Then again, the XM is the first dedicated M car since the M1… and look how that turned out.

Nice
Amazing video but how many people and how often take a +150k car to track?
No matter which car wins the battle I believe both cars are amazing and its ablessing to own …

When has any top notch BMW product been remotely competitive with a top notch Porsche product? Same was the case for the GTS vs. GT3. It’s a different class of car, different price level, for a different customer.

people with spare +$150k that buy +$150k car?

agree- not people who are taking a massive loan to get a $150k range rover those won't be taking the rovers to the mud but these guys have spare cash, they can afford to track and even race these cars.

i don't think the CSL is a very good track car so no they won't be tracking these, probably investing to on sell in the future ....

but what do i know, i don't have spare +$150k lying around. i just see know they do track expensive cars that are made for track.

Oh boy! More comments about how a BMW ///M product should match the GT3 (..or other dedicated Porsche GT product). This is such a two decade old tired argument.

Marketing is winning the battle I think, unfortunately. This car is a nice M4 but IMO not deserving of the CSL badge.

The only reason to buy a CSL over a GT3 is because you can actually find one.

So what would make it deserving???

GT3's can be found much easier than a CSL. The problem is cost and usability; both of which make the proposition of a GT3 prohibitive to most people. While I agree that the CSL isn't going to be daily driven by the large majority of people who own the car, neither is the GT3. Most are garage queen brag-mobiles or Cars & Coffee trophies.

Imagine if BMW looked as nice as GT3. It would be considered a much more comparable alternative. But it looks aggressive and expensive, and thats about it. Its not enough to play vs GT3.

What a surprise. It’s raining.

(I’d still take the CSL. Any day.)

I don’t think this was a bad review for the CSL. I do think people should stop trying to do road tests with this car in the wet, with the wrong seats. But it’s not winning a track battle with a GT3.

That said, on sticky rubber in the dry on a racetrack, it will feel more nuanced than sledgehammer is my guess.

How does it highlight the CSL as a misstep? It’s an incredible car and over $100,000 less than a GT3?

At almost every track day I take my M3 to, there are nowadays more 991/992 GT cars than M3s... so yeah, many people take expensive cars out on circuits.
