Is the next step from 230i/M240 a 718?
Hi all,
Enjoying the car so far. But I'm interested in porsche next- once my lease is done would the updated model redesign 2025 (supposedly) 718 check off what a 230i covers and then some? |

For sure! I am considering the same after having the 240i for only 6 months. It is just too digitally irritating. The BMW nanny wants to hold your hand all the time.
Porsche remains a semi- analog beast |

I have a "slightly tuned" 2017 Boxster, 6MT. Had it since new. Absolutely enjoy every moment of driving it. It is my "summer car" - I live near Toronto. The G42 is actually supposed to be my winter car, but it's a bit more than that A couple of things - the 718 will migrate to electric only for the next generation. That was already (sort of) announced by Porsche. Getting a current run 718 can be very tricky. The wait times for G42 are nothing compared to wait times for Boxster/Cayman. Even for base models. I take the Boxster to the track (Mosport) 4-5 times every summer. Even with 6MT and lower power than most other cars - it is an amazing car to drive on track. That being said - this year I will give the G42 2-3 sessions just to see how they compare. As much fun as it is to drive a 718 - sometimes I just feel there is too much "drama" with it. Yeah - I'm older, the car is a little louder because of the Brombacher tune - but sometimes I wish I could just go for a quiet drive to pick up my Sunday morning coffee. The Porsche definitely requires one's full attention to drive. Not just because of the manual gearbox, but steering and general feel. You feel more engaged. I like the G42 just for the sheer power and acceleration, and the fact that it's more of a "cruiser" (at least compared to the 718).

If going full electrific doesn’t mean anything to you then I’m sure the next gen Cayman will be a looker. |

coming from someone who has driven multiple BMWs and Porsches, I think the G42 more closely resembles older 911s than it does a Cayman or Boxster IMO - in that a base 911 is a classic grand tourer while a 718 is more of a true sports car - mid engine, lighter weight, for better balance. that being said I think the reason why alot of folks feel the 718 is a natural progression from an F22 or G42 has to do with price - a Cayman is cheaper than a 911 - and size - 911s, just like most any car these days including BMWs have gotten larger. obviously there as many similarities as there are differences, but my 230i reminds me quite a lot of my dad's old 993 and 996. the sounds, steering feel, and driving dynamics are very different, but they are similar in terms of performance, interior dimensions, and how they both are just as comfortable gobbling highway miles as they are driving twisty canyon roads. all this to say I think you'll find driving a 718 a more engaging and sporty experience than a G42, whereas a G42 provides more day to day comfort with a small compromise in sportiness... and go test drive one! you are your own best critique! |

thanks for the replies (except the troll i blocked now).
I'm definitely wanting a daily driver, nothing performance...I'm just the typical "would like a BMW because BMW, would like a Porsche because Porsche" person. i do love the Taycan design, and it seems that the next 718 will be a smaller version of that design. I wonder if the ev aspect can balance between over-sporty feel and a regular daily. |

I considered a Porsche once. Then having one view of all those options cured me of that insanity. |

I mean..what else is there? The 718 Cayman is the best Porsche too, IMHO anyway. The 911 has the heritage, the 718 is the better drivers car. |

I was seriously considering a 718 but ultimately wanted something more daily-able. I'd like a 718 or honestly a C6 GS for a track car but I didn't want to commit to using one as a daily. M240 checked more boxes for me. I have a NC Miata to toy with until I decide on what to replace that with for a track car.
