idrive demo starts at minute 10
the one maddening thing i'll share about the hvac control - if you want to change air direction you have to toggle off automatic mode (that tiny little button, so small). also, there are 5 setting for heated seat and 2 of them do nothing |

Its a bit ironic that they could up the resolution and make it even better if the HVAC buttons would still be physical on the part of the dash under the screen.

The number one most annoying thing about iDrive eight is you can no longer toggle dynamic traction on and off with the button. When you press the button it brings up a menu on the iDrive screen and then you have to press to turn traction off and then press again to confirm so now it takes three presses something that took one before.

Excessive reliance on touch controls will be quietly retracted at some point. It’s only a matter of time. Until then, cleaning the ever expanding touch screens is all we can do.

That looks like ID7 with a skin that is way slower/laggier and needs more steps do execute a task.

when my cars with iD7 die i will move to another brand that has buttons though i might not have a choice then and might need to eat my words (i doubt it), it could be so extreme that cars will probably drive you rather than you drive them ... we'll see! |

There's still plenty of room for touch screen improvement. But I can't see us 'going back' to physical buttons. |

[QUOTE=g21;30047220]for me iD8 is a waste of time as I struggle to touch anything on any screen in any car while it is moving. i'm not a 16 year old, i did my entire college degree using library books as there was no google.

All cars will be touch only soon, so you might be committing to buy a used car next to escape it… |

Another idrive8 thread. Yay.
In all seriousness, its software. Its design. It is like apple vs android. People will prefer one over the other. Does that mean either one is worse than the other??? Depends on what you want from an OS. Apple and android fanboys will defend their OS to the death and claim the other is bad. But most just get on with it and use whatever they started with and get used to it. iDrive 8, and for that matter literally every car entertainment system that came before it, currently exists, and after it’s deprecation, will be like that. There will be lovers and haters. To quote James from Throttle House who has this quote he says often that I think is super important for looking at things big picture wise. The question isn’t whether it’s good or bad, you can criticize anything that you think is bad, but the question is “do you get on with it?”, can you learn to live with it and be fine. That is super important, and super subjective person to person. |

One has HVAC buttons, and one doesn’t. One has a thermometer Speedo and tach, and one has fairly normal ones albeit tach in reverse. Completely different experiences for the most part. And I don’t listen to anything TH says anymore. They’re arrogant and biased, although James less so. That being said, he’s right about that, and I got on with iD8 but it’s subpar and inferior to iD7 in pragmatic ways. |

For all the pitchforks relating to idrive 8, I have definitely gotten on with it. I find it to be a nice improvement over idrive 7 in multiple areas. I think if I had to change something, I’d change the circulation menu in the climate control, it should be a button in the menu, not a separate menu. Given the function of changing circulation type can be circumstantial based on where you are driving (farms/skunk) or who is in front of you (truck), having to fumble to that menu for what could be only a minute of needing to change it isn’t that great. But overall. I like it. Take that for what you will. I personally view it as more functional and modern than my experience in idrive 7. |
