COMMENTS
  • Q1 2023 BMW sales up 11.9 % vs Q1 2022.
  • Electrified (combined battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric) vehicles account for approximately 17% of U.S. sales in Q1.
  • Plug-in hybrid electric BMW XM Sports Activity Vehicle begins arriving in showrooms.
  • Q1 2023 MINI sales up 5.9% vs Q1 2022.
  • Woodcliff Lake, NJ – April 3, 2023… BMW of North America today reported Q1 2023 sales results for the BMW and MINI brands in the U.S.

BMW Brand
In the first quarter of 2023, BMW brand sales in the U.S. totaled 82,466 vehicles, an 11.9% increase from the 73,714 vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2022.

BMW Electric Vehicle Sales
BMW currently offers three fully electric models in the U.S. – the BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle and the BMW i4 and BMW i7 Sedans. The first ever fully electric BMW i5 will arrive later this year.

BMW also offers plug-in hybrid electric variants of some of its most popular models including the BMW X5 xDrive45e, BMW 330e and BMW 530e. The plug-in hybrid electric BMW XM Sports Activity Vehicle has also recently begun arriving in showrooms.

In the first quarter of 2023, BMW sold 6,588 battery electric vehicles, which accounts for 8% of total U.S. sales. In total, electrified vehicles (combined battery
electric and plug-in hybrid electric), accounted for nearly 17% of U.S. sales this quarter.

“We are happy to report that the momentum of 2022 has carried over into the start of 2023,” said Sebastian Mackensen, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “And we are confident that sales of our fully electric vehicles will only grow as our lineup expands. All the while we will continue to offer the variety of drivetrains that U.S. consumers want. From electric and hybrid, to our U.S.-built Sports Activity Vehicles, incredible sedans, and new products from BMW M, we are well positioned for a great year.”

MINI Brand
MINI brand sales in the U.S. totaled 7,284 vehicles in the first quarter of 2023, an increase of 5.9% vs the 6,876 vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2022.

Good to see them do well.
I wonder if this can serve as incentive for them to expand the lineup they offer in North America.

I’d love to see the m140i come to NA and tear up the market. They would compete very well with the golf R which sells really well here in Canada. Hot hatches are well received here and despite that they neglect the market. I’d love to see the g81 touring come to Canada as well.

Fun fact - two years running Z4 volume in Q1 has seen a 43% y/y growth. Such tremendous growth means they can’t possibly kill it off, must add a manual option, as well as a full-blown M coupe model.

I can't see them expanding the lineup in that direction given how challenged the smaller vehicles do here. New X8...sure... another 1 or 2 series, doubtful. At some point there must be some dis-economies that occur when there are so many models especially when many are being electrifed. Supporting all of them while introducing neue klasse must be enormously expensive (and nk vehicles are not even scheduled to be made in the US for some time).

Given the increased prices, their profitability must have gone up as well. I hope they don't sense blood in the water and keep on increasing the prices and reducing incentives thinking that there is room to push further.

We are seeing the start of a "golden" 1-2 model cycles for BMW with a great balance between ICE, Hybrid, and EVs.

The sales gap with Mercedes will grow even further by the time CY23 ends.

Just bought a 2022 M440i GC (from previous 2020 440i GC) and absolutely LOVE it. Admit the design required a small adjustment but what a car !! Too much is made of the front end without any acknowledgement of what a great vehicle it is. Get over it already....

Yup, I would much rather drive my i4 M50 than a run of the mill bland frog faced Tesla Model 3.

Yeah if BMW continues pushing that design to rest of the line up, my G30 540i would be my last BMW... I've seen M3/4s in person, looking great from behind, but just terrible in front. Reminds me of these butterfaces back in high school.

Agreed, having owned one, but I wish bmw would produce a model Y competitor. The iX is too pricey. The Y is absolutely killing it.

X3 is the new 3er though that might change once the 3er becomes a full EV.

The Model Y is basically a Model 3 with a higher seating position. There's only 13 mm difference in wheelbase between them.

That size similarity is too close for BMW.

Nah, BMW has the X1,2,3,4,5,6,7 surely they can find a way to have an i that’s lower in price and luxury and size that competes with the Y. Call it the iY, make it an x3 EV (which they decided not to bring to the US market?). They’re excited about 3k iX per quarter (US) while tesla ships 100k+ model Y’s per Q (US - maybe more?). My belief is BMW doesn’t want to cannabalize sales, but I would have bought one in addition to our X5 instead of a model Y. It’s just not something bmw offers right now.

Not sure where you’re getting your numbers but bmw global 2.1M last year, tesla 1.3M. Tesla will likely surpass bmw at some point on current trajectory..
