Custom alcantara / leather / carbon work
Managed to source some authentic dakota korall rot from BMW's supplier.
Previously I had fully wrapped my doorcards and arm rests in 9040 Alcantara, however they felt a little too dark so I decided to go for a 50/50 split by adding some read in to contrasting areas. I also got my dash accent trims, doorcard accent trims and rear seat tray back. These will now match the rest of the interior plain weave carbon theme that I have going on. Once I have them fitted I'll update the thread, I'm super busy currently though so it might be a few days. I also have a custom design arm rest coming which I don't believe will have been done before.. it follows the same 50/50 Alcantara and leather theme.

Carbon fiber steering column under tray ready to go too, the top half is wrapped in 9040 alcantara
And finally the custom center console arm rest. I had one spare so though why not dream up something wild. I made a few renders in photoshop and committed to it - the main thing I wanted was a felled seam down the middle, it helps add depth with the different alcantara and leather textures (basically the alcantara appears taller than the leather) it would have been easy to just settle on red down the sides and black on top but where's the fun in that? haha.

Very cool! I'm in the middle of overhauling my interior with stitched 9040 alcantara and a few carbon fiber bits.

Got one doorcard completed today, I could have just rushed it and bolted them all together but from previous experience the plastic welds vibrate and make an awful shuffling noise if you just screw everything back together, instead I spent a fair amount of time padding and hot glueing contact points first, this should stop any play that would normally buffet about.
Got the passenger doorcard to sort tomorrow as well as laser cut a new 435 dash trim, I'll have to take a rain check on the rears until my supplier gets some more alcantara in as I still need to wrap the rear doorcards. I'm also ditching the 435 alongside the center tunnel, I really don't know what I was thinking with that haha. I may still have some red leather left so I might wrap it with that first. FTR the entire center tunnel is being wrapped in carbon fiber too, I gave this to a friend to sort as I wasn't feeling brave enough to tackle it.

Honestly I love doing performance mods but there's just something so satisfying about custom interior work. No rules at all! I have m performance carbon bits outside which are twill weave (2x2) but my interior is plain weave (1x1). In theory I should redo the exterior weave to match but I like both haha. I think if I did do twill weave on the interior I would go up to a 12k fabric, it's much thicker but stands out a lot more.. it's typically what you find inside super car interiors as you can be a lot more bold with it

I would love to but the leather wouldn't match.. I'd have to get them re-upholstered, which isn't a hassle it just adds to a huge bill ha. I think a set of non butchered comp seats over here would set me back around £2500, then you've got an easy £1400 in upholstery materials and labour costs.

I have seen this split colour way on a handful of M4's in the UK - it's nice and a step in the right direction but I'm always wanting to something that hasn't been done before so maybe I'd include the bolster edging or something in a contrast colour. I guess I need to get seat hunting first haha

They're for the my exhaust remote, I wired some led backlit push buttons onto my aftermarket exhaust valve controller, the key fob has to sit with it though so I hid that inside the V part of the steering wheel trim.

So I had a brainwave of remaking the gearstick gater in alcantara.. however whilst dismantling the gearstick I managed to destroy the wiring loom for the gearstick I pulled up on the leather backing and once it came loose it took the plug with it. Luckily I found a cheap gearstick for £35 on eBay, I traced the wire to the circuit board and luckily it's just a plug so I swapped them over. Whilst I was there I also used the donor backing trim to redo in red leather which was probably the hardest yet.. ideally I needed a leather thinning machine to really strip the thickness out of the hide I have, it took about 3 hours of tucking and folding without the machine. My plan is to redo the bottom triangle trim in red leather instead of the current alcantara, then the entire top piece of the centre console will be wrapped in alcantara. The base is still being carbon skinned Quote:
Sadly the M4 seats will be put on hold for now, retrim quotes from various places in the UK have averaged between £2500-3000. I can't justify a total of £5000 on two front seats, especially for the cars age. If I can source a sub £1k set of seats I may be tempted, the guys who did my arm rest are abroad and they could potentially remake the seat skins for less, those seats would need to be super cheap to make it viable though.

Did you make the carbon fiber trim for the gear shifter yourself? I've had a hell of a time getting a quality piece for that. The two complete replacements I've bought both had quality issues with their cutouts. An overlay is coming today which hopefully will be acceptable until a better solution can be found. I'm just sick of seeing the stock silver trim stick out like a sore thumb, lol.
Also, is the steering column plastic only clipped together? I'm going to wrap both pieces in alcantara soon and only glanced at it today but didn't find any screw holes underneath it. I've been on an interior binge lately. This is 9040 Deep Black. Current progress: |
