ScullyD thank you for sharing

Curious, if you had to sum up your observations thus far about your CSL in one word, what would that word be?

I’m not trying to discount the CSL, but if it doesn’t rev to 9000 it’s not a GT3 replacement discounted or not. Having a rear mount engine rev to 9000 is something that words cannot describe.

I would describe it as a discounted 911 Turbo Sport Classic considering it has the same HP/maybe more, RWD, turbocharged but it affects the senses like a GT3 when driven. just doesn't have a manual which I am honestly grateful for, prefer old manuals not new computer controlled manuals.

A CSL is more of a GT whereas a GT3 is a hardcore race car. Two different genres. If you can afford both they only overlap on the days you need an easier car to drive- which is the BMW…

I would not call the CSL a GT at all. It's a backroad hoon car that's about having fun. I would not want to travel in it.

The whole point of a turbo sport classic is the manual transmission. It’s a turbo without the pdk, which is vastly superior to the zf8.

Yes but we are talking about the CSL in this thread so when I say I am glad it doesn't have a manual, I mean the CSL.

The SC is a Turbo without the PDK or the AWD or the availability.

The PDK is vastly superior to all other automatics so saying it's better than the ZF isn't really saying anything. This side of PDK, the ZF is the best of the rest.

I had a 997 turbo S, the PDK is an amazing gear box. I’m curious how the new z06 and GT500 gearboxes are. I’ve heard great things about them, but have yet to drive one.

I still prefer a 3 pedal car, but the PDK was an amazing gearbox.

Having driven a 991.2 gt3 and a previous gen F80 Cs- that’s how I’d describe it. If a CS-L is even more stripped down in the G series Gen… maybe you’re right. But I came away from the Porsche feeling tired from the sound where the BMW always felt more suited to everyday with less drone. MotoMan has a great spin as usual though …

(MotoMan did mention there is a zero cost swap for 8 way power comfort sport seats- which I think transforms it into the GT).

I suppose it’s flattering in some way towards the CSL. I had a 992 GT3 manual but sold it and actually find the CSL to be more entertaining as a driving experience. My Sport Classic is currently in production so curious to see how it drives (I love turbo torque).

I've said it before and I'll say it again here, for me he closest competitor to the M4CSL in the Porsche lineup is the 911 GTS with lightweight package. Both have very similar intended use cases, performance and price points.

Interestingly though, the german channel GRIP made a video comparing the M4CSL to the 911 Sport Classic not too long ago. But I do not see those two cars in the same use case and price point at all.

Can you link to that, I'd love to see it. I've gone back and forth as to whether it's like a GT3 or Turbo but SC seems pretty close.

Use case for sure, brand collector/fun version

Price point, well Porsches are $$$ so I agree w that.....

Both the GT3 and turbo are higher priced than the M4 CSL and both trump the CSL in performance. You don’t agree that the 911 GTS Lightweight is pretty damn close to the M4CSL?
  • Full lightweight CF bucket front seats
  • Reduced sound deadening
  • No rear seats
  • RWD
  • Stiffer suspension
  • Intended primarily as road car, but still awesome on track
  • Similar MSRP

I don't disagree and also respect your viewpoint. It makes sense. I probably put a little more emphasis on the turbocharged engine of the turbo being a bigger power engine rather than the small turbo gts. Can't hide my American roots.

Typed that before the edit :-)

The CSL has the same basic 3.0L engine as the lesser M4 and makes +40hp from a simple tune. The 911 GTS shares the same basic 3.0L engine as the lesser Carrera models and make +30hp from a simple tune. The turbo, Sport Classic and GT3 all have completely revamped power plants with increased displacement and bigger and more sophisticated turbos for the FI ones.

I agree with your two posts in a line-for-line comparison, and from that frame of reference I would equate the CSL to a GTS. What changes that is the limited access/limited production of the CSL. It is intended to be a limited edition of sorts whereas the GTS isn’t. It is a collector's car in the same way as a limited edition/limited production Porsche.

Yes I can certainly see similarities to both, maybe depends just on perspective.

From a performance perspective, the CSL ran the ring faster than a 992 GTS and a 992 911 Turbo S but obviously the 992 GT3 is fastest.

From a brand lineup perspective, the CSL is BMW's SC, the collectible one that really only appeals to brand fans.

We need to start comparing the GR Corolla and type R to the M3 then talk about how the M3 is only $50,000 more and the M3 is way better in every way. Then go and post it on their respective forums.
