how to activate the garage door opener

Hello good people!

Excited and looking forward to driving home my new X1 (Alpine white) sometime this week.

Wanted to tap on the collective wisdom of the community here and understand how to program the garage door opener.

Some additional context if relevant - our apartment garage works on a vehicle tag, a sensor enabled strip which is typically placed on the dashboard so that the door can detect. Is it possible to use the car's inbuilt garage door for such a scenario and if yes, how?

Best Regards,
Venky

You probably can't program an apartment complex garage door to your car's universal door opener. You would probably need access to the garage door transmitter's "Learn" button, assuming it's not ancient and has a pretty typical "rolling code" or newer system.

That sounds like a passive entry system, which wouldn't work with the garage door opener in the X1 mirror.

The garage door in my building works fine with my 4 series, I just had to follow the normal steps to get it to work. The doors were installed in the last few years so they're pretty new. Same for my e90 and my previous building, though that was 10 years since I last lived there.

You need the stock opener for your garage door, hold down the button you want to program under the mirror (a light on the mirror will begin to blink orange) then hold down the button on your original opener, finally the mirror light will turn green and you've paired the garage door opener.

when I visited my friend in California several years ago, I was amused that his apartment building's parking garage had license plate readers as well transponders for the windshield. when he drove up to the entrance, the transponder is detected first and the gate's camera lights up the front bumper and license plate. if it matches the registered license plate number as the transponder, then it opens... supposedly it prevents residents from letting friends/family not living there borrow the transponder to gain entrance.(not even sure how that became a problem... but they were pretty close to SNA airport)

Unfortunately there's no stock opener for his garage as it's using some sort of barcode on his dash for the garage sensor to pick-up and open the door. As Flashmonkey pointed out, sounds like a passive system

If the system is passive, I actually don't understand why OP wants to program the button. As of now, he pulls up and the door automatically opens - he doesn't need to press anything. Seems to me that is better....

Yeah, good point. Even if you could programme the homelink, it would be redundant
