"Automatic" heated mirrors

Anyone know what the deciding factor for the "automatic" heated mirrors to come on is? The manual just says that they come on automatically. Is it correlated to front or rear window demisting or wipers? They never seem to clear when I want them to clear (in heavy rain). Why can't I just have a button to turn them on myself?!! One annoying thing about my 1 series!

I was also wondering this. Completely agree with you, there should just be a button.

I’ve been told various different things on Facebook groups. I get told it’s on when the fans are blowing on the front windscreen and then I’m told it’s to do with temperature (which my old Polo was too). I went with the latter as the most likely correct answer.
I have noticed it won’t clean large rain water droplets, only frost or ice if that’s what you are referring to
