Tailgate issue

Kick to open tailgate does not work. When I press the button on the key it opens. When I hold to close , I can hear a sound where it tries to close but is not able to. When I press the button near the front seats, the tailgate opens. But when I press the button and hold , it does not close back. Wondering if there is something I’m doing wrong or any any easy fix for this one ?

In the US, it's my understanding that you cannot use the key fob to close the tailgate, only open. You must physically press the button on the hatch to close the tailgate. Once coding becomes available for the new X1, you should be able to code it in where you can use the remote to close the hatch. Apparently other brands like Acura and Buick can close with the remote on some models, but on BMW's as far as I can tell the US doesn't get this feature.

The kick to open feature, you may not have it? Check your paperwork to see if there is a line item on the spec sheet to show it was deleted. Apparently a lot of them will be missing the feature due to parts shortages.

I have a '12 Mazda and a '19 Hyundai - you can open and close the hatch from the fob on both.

In my 2018 Countryman the key fob opens the tailgate but does not close it, you need to press the button on the hatch to do that. The US owners manual for the 23 X1 implies it works the same way.

Yeah, it's pretty much a BMW USA thing. I'm wondering if someone somehow got hurt in the past in the US and tried to sue BMW.

My spec sheet has no deletions and the Ca confirmed this when I asked prior to delivery.

What got me thinking was that , there is a sound where it does try to close it. Does it close when we use the button from the inside ? It seems to be doing that in the earlier model in this video. Need to find out where Michael is located

That's not a US model. All BMW tailgates in the USA don't have the remote closing feature, they have it available in other markets, just not the US (without extra coding). The sound you hear is likely just the motor actuating and trying to open the tailgate and then sensing it's already open, similar to when you try to roll up a window that's already rolled up you'll hear a brief sound of the motor engaging. Not sure if it's supposed to close when you use the interior button though. Is it a 3 position switch where you can either pull or push the button?

So keys don’t close the back hatch. Button inside opens and hold it to close the back.

Have you tried pulling and holding the button as described in the manual?

Thank you. It worked now. I have been under the impression that the “acoustic signal” was a signal of malfunction and let go of the button a little too soon earlier. This is why we need our good friends at Bimmer post !!

And finally something I thought was a deletion is apparently not one. My mind is being trained to think this way now ..🤣
