Love it! Is it gluttony to have a G82 M4 and also want a G81 M3?

Gotta take the bait.

Why is it US 'enthusiasts' are so obsessed with manual boxes regardless of application? A flappy paddle auto suits the size/weight/power of a car like this perfectly. And thats when you ignore the endless stop, start, stop, start, turn ninety degrees, stop, turn ninety degrees, stop of your average US town which makes a manual totally miserable....?

I will never stop saying, it's just cruel we don't get to buy this M3 in the US.

I think you completely miss the point of a manual. A flappy paddle is not even close to rowing your own.

Beautiful!! Nothing cooler than a wagon drifting around. It sucks that it's not coming to the US.

I don't get the wagon fever. The G80 M3 looks so much better, imo.

In a Boxster S on a winding A road, sure.

In a 2 tonne estate car, no thanks.

I'll go ahead and just call it like it is: the average American doesn't know how to drive a manual gearbox, so the ones that can feel special and awesome. Meanwhile, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who can't operate a vehicle with manual gearbox anywhere else in the world.

X5 driver here, but I saw that video on FB. Looks like the Stig is having a great time in an estate car.

Bc it's another level of driver involvement and control and many don't mind the cons of a manual.

What's your response to someone telling you to just buy an EV for your daily commute?

Ultimately, It's a preference and I prefer a 3rd pedal and a manual shifter.

You're missing the point that was trying to be made: there seems to be an American obsession amongst "enthusiasts" around "saving the manuals" and bragging rights associated with being able to drive one.

As an American, I don't think it's an obsession.

"Enthusiasts" or not, some people just want a stick.

I don't like massive tablets in a car either, it has nothing to do with being an "enthusiast".

I guess you could argue that "traditionalists" prefer a manual>auto, knobs/buttons > haptic/touch interface, etc.

Pitching in on the manual vs. auto debate: I do agree that for the G81 an auto makes more sense. It is intended to be a practical daily driver incl. sitting in slow-moving traffic, driving around town, etc. I personally don't want to be operating a clutch pedal in congested traffic.

Manuals are great fun on an open road where you can get in a flow, you can do heel and toe, etc. It's a pleasure to drive in such a way. If I ordered a Porsche of any kind as a fun car I'd definitely have it. Even an M4 I'd probably consider the base model with a manual. But for day-to-day I prefer the compromise of the auto.

That's my 2c.

Have to go with DB Cooper. There looks to be a small group that wants the MT to continue to be available. Don't think "Americans" have an obsession with the MT.

If you look at the sales stats here slightly under 30% are base models with a 6MT.

I drive a mix of MT/AT & specifically chose the Xdrive M4 Competition even though it would mandate an AT. If I bought a Miata it would have been MT.

Think a lot depends on the car. My 330Ci ZHP was a MT along with my 135is. Had a 335IS 7DCT. Cars I have built were about 3 to 1 MTs

Also have seen more than a few "bragging rights" from the MT group. Things like "Man Pedal" or you don't like MT because you can't drive it etc.

Personally, I don't see the big deal about being able to drive an MT. When I was young from a working class family you could either drive MT or you took a bus. An AT was an expensive option. First car I bought new was a 4MT.

FWIW my Wife, three daughters & grand daughter can all drive MT.

Tell me a G8X story is posted on front page news, without telling me its front page news. Someone still says something about the grille.

Usually it's someone from the M2 forum, who now has an uglier car, that they say is beautiful.
