BMW Manual Transmission alive in M cars until end of the decade says M CEO

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
BMW M CEO Frank van Meel recently was asked about the future of manual transmission in BMWs. Here's his answer from the BMW M Festival at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in South Africa
"The manual is, unfortunately, not so widespread anymore. It's more in the segments of the M2 and M3, and the M4. And for those cars, we continue offering the manual, and those cars will run for a long time until the end of this decade," van Meel told CarBuzz.

“The manual is not so widespread anymore. We removed that option to make sure nobody could order them to fulfill our self-fulfilling prophecy. In the next decade, the ICE will not be so widespread, because we will not be offering it anymore.”

So essentially the manual transmission is gone after the current run/production of the M2/M3/M4.

That's just saying that they will leave Manuals in the current M cars until they run out of production. This headline is misconstruing that they will be making new M cars with manuals, which they never said. That's not an enthusiastic quote btw almost reads like "people still order these things with manuals, so we have to keep it in them."

Doesn't give me confidence they are developing a special manual M2.

Considering it's the only BMW left with a manual (at least in the US) and the next gen of M cars will be hybrid or full EV then yeah.

The only 2 reasons I still have my 2006 530xi is it is a manual transmission, and it is AWD. Scuse me..... 3, and it still runs well!
To my knowledge, and I'm hoping you guys correct me, the last manual AND AWD 5 SERIES was produced as a 2010. I am not sure about the 4 Series or a 3 series, but I am willing to learn and look into them.

In other words the manual dies with the G series, no surprises there I guess.

A friend of mine test drove a 435 with manual transmission back in 2016… Looks like F3x was the last 3/4 series with manual…

Yeah, there was an F30 xDrive manual.

It's sad to see the manual going away especially on the special M models. I understand the reasons why, and it's one of the main reasons I got the F87 manual.

Similar to any Ferrari, Lambo or Porsche from the 90s-2000s the manuals are a lot more saught after.

It's only when you lose something that you truly realise what it was worth to you.

I have a feeling somebody is going to develop a manual-like gearbox for electric cars in the future—something to enhance engagement. It is inevitable. It won't be the same thing obviously but will simulate that feeling, probably.

Til then—the electric car police are going to have to the rip my 1M key out of my hands to get me to stop driving it!!! RESIST!!

Well, I’m happy BMW still makes manuals. At least they are walking the walk. However, this is inevitable if the consumers don’t vote with their wallets and buy more manuals. Case in point, check out the G8X forums and peek at those with a manual vs auto.

For as much criticism as the G8X gets, it will likely be remembered fondly if it goes down as the last pure ICE/MT M3.

2030 is a ways out and lots of things could happen. EVs could flip and frazzle or someone could figure out how to make an EV manual or perhaps figure out a way to keep ICE cars alive.

In either way the market will shift as it has over the last 7yrs. Who would of thought SUVs would rule the world even with high gas prices?

Okay if we Bimmer enthusiasts want to speculate, either the current G8x model years goes beyond their 6 years cycle or one more generation of M cars after 2028? 🤔🤔🤔

FYI, Toyota is already developing manual EV's: https://insideevs.com/news/566896/to...-transmission/

If you truly think about it, there is no reason for the concept of a manual to go away with EV's, as long as it can be mocked with some degree of accuracy.
