G82 M4 Competition real world fuel economy test: 30+ MPG

BIMMERPOST

Thought this was interesting. I don't have the patience to run a test like this. But in real world testing, the G82 Comp achieves over 30mpg at 72 mph.

I've hit 30 mpg with the MT cruising on long trips, so nothing surprising.

I never paid much attention. I just know that it gets in the 300s per tank.

Reminds me of Top Gear's M3 vs Prius test.

When there's not a lot of traffic, I hit low 30s (converted) on my commute easily. And that's with start-stop permanently disabled.

Amazing do-it-all car.

How is your start stop setup in Europe? We have setting in iDrive, to just turn it off, completely. It was turned off when I took delivery of the car, and and car has never start-stopped, from day one. I might just turn it on, to see if it works.

In the UK we have it configurable in the M1/M2 settings but in Comfort mode, I think it defaults to on. I've forgotten as I coded it off from day one!

Well, at least you can code it out. I've never seen it work. The car just came from the factory with it off by default. Got lucky.

Great achievement, these new engines are miraculous, just a few years ago it would have been crazy to even think about that efficiency with this power.
Some people still regret the old NA engines (and I totally understand their reasons), but it's hard to complain about d.i., downsizing and turbocharging when you can get that kind of fuel consumption on 500+ hp cars if you don't ask for all the power.
I mean, with the S65/S85 it was almost impossible to get 20 mpg even at low speed cruising, and they were nowhere near as high-performance as the new engines.

I'm consistently getting around 23mpg in my Macan Turbo the way I drive normally. Wonder how close this G80 would get me to that?

My F82 used to regularly achieve 37mpg on a motorway run of 180 miles with a Stage 1 map

Cruising at legal speeds and not heavy on the loud pedal

Well considering the weight, aerodynamics and rolling resistance of an SUV, you can only get better. Way better.

I would have never thought you could get close to 30mpg in a 500hp car. I came from DSMS and Evos, with 2 liter 4 cylinders that got 18-22 with manual transmissions. This is amazing.

I'm going to try this in my G82 xDrive as soon as I get the chance. I've taken long trips in it, but I always end up taking a trip to Mexico along the way.

One of the last bmw meetups I went to, a friend in an F80 followed me down to the meetup spot, and he told me that he had a full tank when we left.

We got to the meetup spot and then we headed down south, even further into some canyon driving. He pulled over to get gas, saying he was on the gas light, which I thought was crazy, because I was still slightly above half a tank. I'm thinking, there's no way, that F80 was only getting 150 miles before the gas light came on.

I drove hard in the canyons and drove another 130 miles home, stopping in Mexico a few times, and still make it back to my neighborhood right after the fuel reserve light came on. The guy lived like 15 minutes past me, and he said when he got home, he was on the gas light again.

Like the car had a hole in the tank. I just thought having a DCT and less hearing that car just got trash mileage. I guess that's not normal? :

Wow, that's pretty amazing! Love the S58. My E90 M3 mpg sucks balls, hypermiling for 22mpg is as good as it gets.

Yes but it's just ticking over. I get 25 local 4/5 trips, stop/start journies and typically around 30 on a 150 mile 75/80 mph run on E5 99 octane fuel

Not surprising. I could achieve 30+ MPG out of the F8X's too. I can get 36/31 MPG (..freeway/combined) from my manual transmission 992 C2S if I'm not constantly in the "happy zone".

That's exactly what I was thinking when I wrote the post. and the AWD had 410 gears, which made it worse. I had 5 DSMs, 4 AWD and 1 FWD. The Fwd got so much better gas mileage, but it just wasn't drivable at 460hp.

Daily driving mostly around town I get 21mpg... driving on the interstate for long trip I'll average around 30mpg... and then there's that occasional time where I'll average 12mph, lol. I love this car.
